Wednesday, January 25, 2017 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon OSU scientists sequence genome of beaver Oregon man admits groping girl on flight By Steven DuBois Associated Press EUGENE (AP) — Scientists at Oregon State University have sequenced the beaver genome thanks to a 2015 crowdfunding effort. T h e R e g i s t e r- G u a rd reports that the funding drive raised $20,001 from 103 donors. OSU used the money to pay for research on the genetic code of its mascot animal, the North American beaver. The project used a blood sample from the 5-year-old beaver, Filbert, who lives at the Portland Zoo. OSU researchers say they dis- covered that beavers have 26,200 genes, or about 33 percent more inheritable information that humans have. OSU says the project was done in a spirit of fun but could also lead to scien- tific advances by providing insights into beaver popula- tions, diseases and evolution- ary history. Oregon jobless rate drops to record low set in 1995 EUGENE (AP) — Oregon’s average unemploy- ment rate has fallen to match a previous low record set in the economic boom of the mid-1990s. T h e R e g i s t e r- G u a rd reported Thursday that according to the state Employment Department, Oregon’s unemployment rate fell to 4.6 percent in December, from 5 percent in November. For 2016, Oregon had an average rate of 4.9 percent, matching a previous low set in 1995. Between December 2015 and December 2016, employers in Oregon added 52,900 jobs when season- ally adjusted, an increase of 2.9 percent. The national job growth rate is 1.5 percent. The state’s fastest-grow- ing industries in 2016 by per- centage were construction, which grew by 8.1 percent; other services such as repair and maintenance, which grew by 4.8 percent; and professional and business services, which grew by 4.5 percent. PORTLAND (AP) — An Oregon man accused of groping a 13-year-old girl on a flight from Dallas to Portland pleaded guilty Thursday, accepting an agreement with prosecutors that will require him to reg- ister as a sex offender for 15 years. Chad Camp, 26, was scheduled to be sentenced May 3 with a recommenda- tion for a 14-month prison term and credit for time already served, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Edmonds said. FBI agents arrested Camp after his June flight landed at Portland International Airport. Authorities said an American Airlines flight attendant delivering snacks early in the flight noticed Camp’s hand in the girl’s crotch area, and a tear fall- ing down her face. The flight attendant then separated the two. Camp, of Gresham, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman to making an inde- cent sexual proposal to a minor and assault with intent to commit abusive sexual contact of a minor. Oregon after completing a residential treatment for alco- hol dependency in Florida. A witness told police Camp had at least four mixed drinks during a layover in Dallas. In court Thursday, Camp acknowledged having a “large amount” of alcohol before sitting next to the girl. “I invaded her space, touching her in her thigh and her groin area,” Camp said. “I had inappropriate conversations with her. My words were fairly consid- ered to be indecent. What I did was wrong in all respects.” The girl was flying as an unaccompanied minor, and her family has filed a $10 million lawsuit against American Airlines.
