Girls basketball opens league play with win
By Rongi Yost
Correspondent
The Lady Outlaws strug-
gled to get the ball through
the hoop, but still managed to
pull off a 21-13 victory over
the Sweet Home Huskies in
the Sky-Em league opener
at home in Sisters on Friday,
January 13.
Sweet Home has a very
similar program as Sisters,
and both programs are in the
developmental stage. It was
a very low-scoring contest,
and both teams had a hard
time getting their shots to
fall.
Sisters only shot 18
percent from the field as
a team, and were zero
percent from behind the
arc.
Rylee Weber and Alexa
Stewart each scored six
points, and Sydney Head
added four. Amanda Smith
had six blocks in the
game.
“We had plenty of oppor-
tunities, but if we can’t get
the ball to go in, it’s going to
be difficult for us to be suc-
cessful,” said Coach Alan
Von Stein. “The girls are
working hard, and are com-
ing together nicely as a team,
but we have plenty of work
to do.”
The Outlaws walked
away with their first con-
ference win of the season
and are currently 5-6 over-
all. Sisters was to play at
Cottage Grove on Tuesday,
January 17. The Lady
Outlaws will play at home
against Sutherlin on Friday,
January 20.

Outlaws put the bite on Huskies in league opener
By Rongi Yost
Correspondent
The Outlaws had to battle
weather as much as any oppo-
nent last week. Tuesday’s
game against Madras on
January 10 was canceled
because of school closures.
There was no school on Friday
because of school closures
due to building inspections
of snow loads. Inspections
passed, roofs were cleared
of snow, and Sweet Home
traveled over the pass for the
Sky-Em league opener.
The Outlaws played well
on both the offensive and
defensive ends of the court,
and defeated the Sweet Home
Huskies 50-25. Sisters’
defense was on-point, and the
Outlaws made it difficult for
the Huskies to score.
Sisters’ offense put up 16
points in the first quarter and
12 in the second to hold a
28-11 lead over the Huskies
at the half. In the third, the
Outlaws’ offense had a bit of
a lull and only scored eight
points.
“We were trying too hard
to make big plays, rather than
make the extra pass,” said
Coach Rand Runco. “Once
we corrected that, we were
back on track.”
Sisters held onto the lead
and a lot of players got to see
time on the hardwood.
Ty Horner led the Outlaws
with 12 points, Noah Richards
scored 10, Jack Berg recorded
eight points, and Tyler Head
added six.
The Outlaws shot well
from behind the arc. Richards
and Berg both hit two threes
in the game and Horner
recorded one.
Horner, the Head broth-
ers, JW Bertagna, and Keegan
Greaney all rebounded well.
As a team, the Outlaws were
11/12 from the stripe.
Runco said, “We defended
the drive well, and our defen-
sive rebounding was excel-
lent. It was a good game with
well-balanced scoring in and
out of the paint. It was a good
team win.”
Sisters was to play Cottage
Grove on Tuesday, January
17. The Lions are last year’s
defending league champs and
return four of their five start-
ers. On Friday, January 20, the
