Holiday giving program
helps those in need

Sisters students benefit from donations to Sisters Schools Foundation.
Foundation completes fall grants
The Sisters Schools
Foundation recently com-
pleted their fall grants for
the Sisters School District.
Activities and programs at
each of the three schools were
funded to a total of $34,000.
New microscopes and
cameras, as well as pro-
gram funding for Interim
Day was funded at Sisters
High School. The Battle of
the Books program, funding
for Outdoor School and the
Ashland Shakespeare field
trip along with new SPRK
Robotic Kits for the technol-
ogy program were funded at
Sisters Middle School. The
fourth-grade Oregon History
Field Trip received funding
as well as new portable gym
nets, games and activities
for indoor recess and a new
DrumFIT program were
funded at Sisters Elementary
School.
The Sisters Schools
Foundation is a volunteer-run
organization, which began in
1997. As funding diminished
from public tax funds for co-
curricular and academic pro-
grams, patrons of the Sisters
School District proclaimed:
“We can have an impact, we
can affect the educational
lives of our children.”
In 1997 the Starry Nights
Concert Series was born
and has since raised nearly
$1 million benefiting the

Twenty-five percent of
all general funds raised are
placed in an endowment
fund. The foundation views
this as a lasting way to have
impact and be self-sustaining
sometime in the future.

The giving spirit of Sisters
is never more evident than
during the holiday season.
Last weekend was the
annual distribution of holiday
meal cards (from Food4Less
and Melvin’s Fir Street
Market) and toys for Sisters
families through Sisters
Kiwanis and the Sisters-
Camp Sherman Fire District,
along with the distribution of
pet food through the Furry
Friends Foundation.
Fault in cable knocked
out Crossroads power
A fault in an underground
cable caused a power failure
that affected 93 households in
Crossroads last Saturday.
A Central Electric
Cooperative spokesperson
reported that a fault in an
underground cable caused
the outage and crews had to
work hard to find the fault.
Then they had to bring in
equipment to dig up the cable

in frozen conditions and a
couple of feet of snow.
Such faults are usu-
ally caused when insulation
around a cable breaks down
over time and electricity
seeps into the surrounding
ground, causing a short.
Power was out for
about 10 hours in part of
Crossroads, on a day that saw
frigid temperatures.

All of these programs are
supported through community
and business donations.
Furry Friends provided pet
food for dogs, cats and a vari-
ety of other pets, serving 103
families and a total of 237 pets.
The fire district reported
serving 138 families and 167
children through the Spirit
of Giving Christmas Tree.
Patrons picked an ornament
and provided a gift for the
child listed on it.
