Student featured in campaign
Tanner Hosang, a student
at Sisters Elementary School,
is being featured this week
as part of a statewide public
education support campaign
known as “The Promise of
Oregon.”
The “Promise” campaign,
which officially debuted in
November 2014, aims to cre-
ate public support for K-14
education, to help meet the
state’s 40-40-20 goals and
lift student achievement and
graduation rates. New for fall
2015 and beyond, the Promise
campaign is showcasing dis-
tricts whose cutting-edge pro-
grams are preparing students
for careers and college.
Tanner is one of five stu-
dents statewide who will be
featured prominently this
week on the campaign web-
site, www.promiseoregon.
org.
The website includes pho-
tos and videos of Oregon stu-
dents who have completed the
sentence: “I am the Promise
of Oregon because…”
The “Promise” campaign
is being coordinated by
the Oregon School Boards
Association (OSBA). The
campaign is based on two
defining principles:
• Today’s students are
Oregon’s greatest natural
resource.
• We as Oregonians must
invest in our public schools
so the next generation can
reach its potential.
“Our challenge now is to
dream bigger,” said Betsy
Miller-Jones, OSBA’s exec-
utive director. “We need
to imagine just how far
our districts could take our
young people if we as a state
invested more in our great-
est natural resource – our
children.”
OSBA is a member ser-
vices agency for more than
200 locally elected boards
serving school districts, edu-
cation service districts and
community colleges. It also
provides services to charter
schools and their boards. For

mandatory criteria within
those categories to receive
the award.
District Finance Manager
Kay Johnson was also rec-
ognized with a Certificate
of Recognition for Budget

presented by the GFOA to
those individuals who have
been instrumental in their
government unit achiev-
ing a Distinguished Budget
Presentation Award. Johnson
credits the board of directors
and the budget committee for
their commitment and adher-
ence to nationally recognized
budgeting standards and
practices.
“It’s an honor to work for
a fire district that has such
high expectations for finan-
cial management and budget-
ary practices,” Johnson said.
“Our entire staff participates
in the budgetary process and
shares in this recognition”
District Board President
Chuck Newport said, “This
was an organizational goal
for the District this year, and
I know how hard Kay and the
rest of our staff has worked to
make this happen. The board
is very proud of everyone
who worked on this year’s
budget.”
