Wednesday, November 30, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y ‘Piano Bar’ on tap for theater group ByKSteveKKadel Correspondent Silent Echo Theater Company members will pres- ent two nights of musical fun in December with “Piano Bar,” an audience-participa- tion event in which commu- nity members are invited to step onstage and sing. The evenings will be hosted by Sisters residents Scout Miller and Rob Merola, both of whom will display their vocal talents. Silent Echo President Marla Manning said those who attend will see a list of several songs planned for the presentation — and they can take the microphone to add their voices if they wish. “The hope is that everyone will sing,” she said. “They don’t have to sing alone — it can be duets or five or six together.” “We wanted to set the audience in cafe style so it’s comfortable,” added Silent Echo Treasurer Leslie Newbold. “Piano Bar” will stage at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, See KPIANOKBARK on page 27 PHOTO PROVIDED PamKKeeton,Kright,KwillKsingKaboardKtheKUSSKMissouriKatKPearlKHarbor. Nonprofits benefit from Local to sing at Pearl Harbor event local farm program ByKJimKCornelius ByKErinKBorla Correspondent Local farm and educa- tional asset Seed to Table has provided over 3,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables to local nonprofits this year. Over the course of the past several months locally and organically grown produce has been distributed to the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank, Sisters Westside Church Food Bank, and Sisters School District Nutrition Services. That equates to 200 fami- lies being provided with options ranging from fresh salad greens, carrots, beets, onions, kale and more on a weekly basis throughout the growing season. Over the course of the next several weeks Seed to Table’s Sustainable Agriculture class at Sisters High School will harvest and provide bunches of winter carrots, beets and salad greens for holiday bas- kets — all serving families in need in Sisters Country. Seed to Table is funded through grants as well as selling their produce shares. Beginning next week, 2017 See KSEEDKTOKTABLEK on page 31 News Editor December 7 will mark the 75th anniversary of the Imperial Japanese attack on the U.S. Navy fleet at Pearl Harbor — the event that plunged America into World War II. Pam Keeton will be there, standing shoulder-to-shoul- der with the 42-voices-strong Oregon Spirit Chorus, on the deck of the USS Missouri. Keeton is one of three women from Central Oregon who will sing during an event that features groups from all 50 states. Keeton, who sings with Bella Acapella in Bend, has been traveling to Salem since July to rehearse with the Oregon Spirit Chorus, a women’s barbershop chorus in which she sings bass. “We’re all going over on the 5th and will be there from the 5th through the 9th,” Keeton told The Nugget. Her husband, Steve Keeton, will accompany her and visit the memorial at Pearl Harbor. “Singing on the actual day of the 7th on the deck of the Mighty Mo — we’re pretty excited about that,” Keeton said. Many U.S. military veterans, including survi- vors of the Pearl Harbor attack, will be on hand for the observances. The Oregon Spirit Choir will sing several pieces, including “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” Happy Together,” “From A Distance,” “Let Freedom Ring,” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Keeton has been singing with Bella Acapella for about three years. She was a music major in college and has been a singer her whole life. The trip to Pearl Harbor marks a highlight of her life in music. “I feel so honored,” she said. “I get goosebumps thinking about it.” SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR BOARDS, GROUPS, CLUBS Al-Anon Monday, noon, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church; Wednesday, 6 p.m., Episcopal Church of the Transfi guration. 541-549-8737 or 541-549-1527.
