SHS yearbook available SPRD receives grant for bike park
for pre-order
The 2017 Sisters High
School yearbook is now
available for pre-order
online.
Sisters High School has
a committed yearbook staff
including: Cierra Haken, Mia
Cook, Ellie Cook, Cassidy
Ling-Scott, Annika Stadeli,
Will Werts, Ceili Cornelius,
Amanda Smith and Mckenna
Marshall. Jim Cornelius and
Jerry Baldock are advising.
This year’s staff is the larg-
est staff SHS has ever had,
and everyone is committed
to making the best 2017 year-
book possible.
Each member has their
own interests in what
they do with the book,
The Sisters Park &
Recreation District (SPRD)
recently received official noti-
fication from Oregon State
Parks that they are to receive a
$25,000 grant from the Local
Government Grant Program
for the Bike Park 242 project.
The Bike Park 242 project
started two years ago after
some Sisters locals noticed
children building make-
shift jumps on vacant lots.
Joel Palanuk, Casey Meudt,
Brittany Simonis and Bob
Hoffman approached SPRD
to see if there was a loca-
tion where a bike park could
be built. A committee was
formed and what followed
was two years of commu-
nity effort to make this idea a
reality.
Just a few short months
after the initial idea was pre-
sented, the group had worked
with staff from SPRD to put
together an extensive grant
application to help support the
project. Although the grant
application was ultimately
unsuccessful, the Sisters
community stepped up in a
big way. Volunteers from the
Sisters Trails Alliance, spear-
headed by Tracy Stout, rented
equipment and started haul-
ing dirt out to the site, where
Randy Gardner was able to
start distributing the material.
Volunteers from the Central
Oregon Trails Alliance
(COTA) and Dirt Mechanics
then took on the job of screen-
ing and shaping this dirt into
the small pump track, which
is designed for beginners
including design; writing;
photography; and business
advertising.
“I look forward to work-
ing with this year’s team to
create our best yearbook yet,”
said staff member Cierra
Haken.
The team will be working
closely with Genie Westfall,
of Herff Jones publishing
company, to create and print
this year’s book. To pre-

and young children. The next
phase of construction was
championed by David Nelson
for his Eagle Scout proj-
ect. Supported by his father;
Wayne; his family; and many
members of his scout group,
David worked with the SPRD
bike park committee and
COTA volunteers to make
Phase 2 a reality.
With this much com-
munity support easy to see,
SPRD staff assisted the com-
mittee in submitting another
grant application. This time
Oregon State Parks approved
the groups’ grant request
of $25,000. The project is
anticipated to cost a total of
$50,000 to complete, and will
rely heavily on donated mate-
rials and labor. Committee
member Casey Meudt feels
the community will continue
to help.
“We already have a bunch
of people who have pledged
money, materials, and time
to help this project, and I
anticipate even more stepping
up now that we have been
awarded this grant,” he said.
Phase 3 will include the
addition of two jump-lines, a
skills park, and a family pic-
nic area. Blazin Saddles bike
shop in partnership with the
Sisters Stampede bike race
have already conducted a
fundraiser that will cover the
cost of the picnic benches and
fencing for the front of the
park. The project is dependent
on $25,000 dollars in donated
labor, cash, and materials to
match the $25,000 in grant
funding.
We already have a
bunch of people who
have pledged money,
materials, and time to
help this project...
— Casey Meudt
The Sisters Park and
Recreation District hopes
to officially open the new-
est addition to their parks
inventory in late spring. In
the meantime the two pump
tracks are open for the pub-
lic to enjoy. Additional infor-
mation on the project and
upcoming volunteer oppor-
tunities can be found on the
Bike Park 242 Facebook
page, or by contacting SPRD
at 541-549-2091.
