Wednesday, September 28, 2016 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon 17 Outlaws host volleyball Athletes take on Hoodoo Challenge invitational tourney By rongi Yost Correspondent Hawley Harrer had an outstanding day and was a dominant player for the Outlaws throughout the Sisters Invitational Volleyball Tournament held on Saturday, September 24. Harrer helped lead the Outlaws to a second- place finish. Sixteen of the best 4A teams were in attendance from all around the state. Sisters beat all three of their opponents in pool play. The Outlaws started with wins over Stayton and North Bend and then went neck- and-neck with Valley Catholic (VC) before pulling ahead to claim the victory. Coach Rod Jones told The Nugget that the game against VC could easily have been a championship match. In bracket play, the Outlaws started with a win over Henley in the quarterfi- nals. Sisters gave a few points away, but overall managed the match quite easily. In the semifinals, Sisters defeated Vale, who had a cou- ple of nice athletes on their squad. The first game was tight and competitive, but in the second set the Outlaws blew the game wide open. Sisters faced VC in the championship match, and lost the contest 15-25, 19-25. In both games the score was tied 15-15, but according to Jones the Outlaws quit passing and just couldn’t get big swings. VC took advantage of Sisters’ mistakes, won the match, and claimed the top spot. Jones said, “The tourna- ment went very well. It was very competitive and there were lots of good athletes and good volleyball all day long. We could easily see a lot of these teams at the state tournament. We could easily see a lot of these teams at the state tournament. — rod Jones “We had a lot of good moments today, but those moments would be followed with sloppy play,” added Jones. “We’re still too incon- sistent and we have to know how to turn it around when we get in a funk.” Thirty-eight bold souls took the Hoodoo Challenge and ran or walked the 13.1 miles of a half-marathon at the local ski resort. The event was spon- sored by Sisters Kiwanis and served as a fundraiser for the club’s many service endeav- ors in Sisters. Following registration at the Hoodoo Ski Area parking lot, participants were shuttled to the race start at the Corbett Trailhead. The race course passed Island, Link and Sand lakes and was relatively flat with a few rolling hills — until it hit the elevation gain of 1,035 feet to the summit of Hoodoo. The overall winner was Nick Scalfone from Bend with a time of 1:29:20.1. Jason Adams placed second with a time of 1:41:46.6. Third overall was Ryan Singleton with a time of 1:44:56.7. The top female finisher was Bryn Singleton from Sisters with a time of 1:58:36.0.
