Quilters push themselves to the edge
By Jim Cornelius
News Editor
For the 14 art quilters of
the local group Journeys,
their work is all about push-
ing themselves creatively. In
their current exhibit, they are
pushing themselves right to
the edge.
Journeys Art Quilters of
Central Oregon will open an
exhibit at Sisters Art Works,
204 W. Adams Ave. The 14
original quilts are inspired by
a poem, “Come to the Edge”
by Christopher Logue. An art-
ist reception will be held on
September 23, from 5 to 7
p.m.
June Jaeger told The
Nugget that this exhibit
represents a determination
among the artists to challenge
themselves.
“We decided this year,
nobody’s going to take the
easy way out — everybody’s
going to be challenged,” she
said. “I think we all grew
extensively. I know I did. We
all pushed ourselves.”
Jaeger described her own
work:
“I took molding pate and
a hair comb and I glommed
it on a piece of fabric and I
kept dragging it through until
I had a bark effect,” she said.
“It was a huge challenge and
I had a hard time figuring out
even how to cut it.”
Jaeger settled on leather
shears to get the cutting done
— and then there was the
matter of getting the fabric to
bond.
“I went through three
packages of sewing machine
needles — big, heavy ones,”
she said. “But I got it done.”
It was not just a logistical

and material challenge. Jaeger
says that she is a realistic and
detailed quilter. On this one,
she was more impressionistic
than she’s used to, leaving a
lot “unsaid” and mysterious.
Artistic challenge on all
levels is what Journeys is
about, and the quilters are
eager to share their journey
at the artists’ reception on
Friday.
The exhibit runs through
November 16. Visit www.

Clover Keyes, age 7, ran a lemonade stand with her
friends in front of Heritage USA during the last day of
Sisters Folk Festival, specifically to raise money for
Furry Friends Foundation. She came into The Nugget
last week with her mom, Josie Keyes, carrying a jar
with dollars and change.
