Raptors seize library walls
David West, a Bend resi-
dent, lost his leg to infection
last January.
Local veterans activist
Tom Barrier saw him try-
ing to cross Third Street in
Bend in his wheelchair on
August 24.
“I circled the block to find
him,” Barrier said. “After
a short conversation it was
discovered that David had
served with the Coast Guard
during the 1960s. I had an
electric scooter that was
donated to me by Brookside

All through the month of
September an exhibit on rap-
tors will be featured in the
Community Room of the
Sisters Library.
Kevin Smith up in
Crooked River Ranch
dropped off a bunch of his
shots of raptors taken near
his place. Al St. John, local
expert and author on herp-
tiles, dropped off three of his
raptors. Local artist Jennifer
Hartwig jumped right in with
owls and eagles scratchboard
work.
Birder Tom Crabtree’s
work will be included. He’s
one of the original members
of Central Oregon Audubon

great gray owl portrait,
which normally hangs in the
Anderson house, is spec-
tacular. And wait ’til you see
Charlie Baughman’s eagles!
Baughman has the good
fortune to live in one of the
Deschutes River canyons
between Bend and Redmond;
his home is about a football-
field-length from an active
golden eagle nest. He often
sat on his deck, camera in
hand while “Chester” and

versation I asked David if he
could use an electric scooter.
David answered in the affir-
mative, but couldn’t afford
one and VA would take too
long.”
Barrier told the Coast
Guard veteran that the scooter
would be a gift from Sisters
Band of Brothers.
On Sunday, August 28,
Tom and his wife, Lorraine,
went to West’s residence and
presented him with a nearly
new three-wheel electric
scooter, to the man’s tearful
joy.
