Veterans power football squad

Preschool offers enrichment activities for kids.
SPRD preschool
taking enrollments
The Sisters Park &
Recreation District (SPRD)
Community Preschool is
currently enrolling for the
Grasshopper (age 3 to 4)
and the Dragonfly (age 4 to
5) classes. The Community
Preschool, with both classes
housed at Sisters Elementary
School is a three-star rated
preschool by Oregon State
QRIS program.
Students have a structured
portion of the day, which
includes art projects, story-
time, experiential learning
and more. A new backyard
play area with interactive
toys, sandboxes and water
tables lets little ones explore
their creative side.
“Our kids love playing in
the backyard, playing dress-
up and learning new things
every day,” said lead teacher
Valerie Selig. “Our field trips
to the pumpkin patch, local
parks, businesses and the
library allow us to get our
students out into the commu-
nity and learn about Sisters,
too!”
Being housed in Sisters
Elementary School has its
advantages. Students in
the SPRD program get the
chance to participate in
school assemblies and are
challenged to “be respectful,
be responsible and be safe,”
just like the students in the
school. The school principal
regularly drops into classes
and says hello. With this sup-
port, students from the SPRD
program can seamlessly tran-
sition to kindergarten when
the time comes.
Parents can register their
child for 3 to 5 days per
week; half and full days are
available. Days and times
are available on a first-come,
first-served basis.

Thirteen experienced, vet-
eran players return to Sisters
High School’s football squad
this season. Seven seniors,
Tanner and Tyler Head, Jacob
and Johnny Gurney, Ryan
Cook, Tucker Brink and Ben
Saba will finish up their final
year as Outlaws.
Tanner Head, a three-
year starter and all-leaguer,
will direct the team from the
quarterback position. Tyler
Head is also a three-year
starter, and was an all-league
player on both sides of the
ball last year. Tyler will play
at tight end and rover.
Jacob Gurney returns
as an all-league linebacker
and offensive lineman and
Johnny Gurney returns as an
all-league linebacker. Ryan
Cook will be key for the
Outlaws at linebacker, along
with the Gurney brothers.
Tucker Brink will bring
experience to the squad at the
strong safety position. Ben
Saba rounds out the senior
players and will be part of
a solid group of receivers
for the Outlaws, along with
Jacob Gurney, Tyler Friend,
Christopher Luz and Korbin
Sharp.
Jaden Condel, Tyler
Friend, Christopher Luz,
Zach Morgan, Chase Sproat,
and Brady Wessel return
as juniors, along with lone
sophomore returnee Joel
Miller.
Condel is a potential
two-way starter on the offen-
sive and defensive line.
Friend, according to Coach
Gary Thorson, is a hard
worker, who had a good off-
season, and will be part of the
receiver group. Luz will con-
tribute on special teams, and
also be one of the Outlaws’
receivers. Morgan is an all-
league punter, and will be a
weapon on special teams.
Sproat will compete at
both quarterback and safety
and should contribute on
special teams. Wessel was
an all-league center last year,
and along with Miller, who
started at defensive tackle the
second half of the season last
year as a freshman, will be a
force at defensive tackle.
Eight additional play-
ers, seniors Will Miner,
Kade Owen, Jake Welch,
juniors Zack Gulick, Austin
Lake, Ethan Morgan, Jacob
Stevens, and sophomore
Korbin Sharp, join the var-
sity team, and will lend depth
to the squad.
Miner is a transfer run-
ning back, and will be
an impact player for the
Outlaws this season, while
Owen and Welch should con-
tribute on the offensive line.
Gulick is a potential two-way
starter on both the offensive
and defensive line. Lake is
new to the program, but has
shown promise at tight end
and defensive end.
Ethan Morgan is also

new to the program, and has
shown promise at running
back and the strong safety
position. Stevens will help
provide depth at linebacker
and the running back posi-
tions. Sharp is one of the
Outlaws’ hardest workers,
and will see action as both a
wide receiver and defensive
back.
One of the Outlaws’ big-
gest goals this season is
to increase leadership in
the program. Coach Gary
Thorson told The Nugget that
although the Outlaws had a
good season last year, they
lacked leadership at times,
which hurt them down the
stretch when they needed it
the most.
“I think we have some
very good athletes and solid
football players on this
team, but what I have been
impressed by so far the most
is their commitment to focus-
ing on the leadership, as well
as their focus overall,” said
Thorson.
“We’ve had a great week
of doubles; one of the best I
have seen a high school team
have in terms of preparations
and attendance, and I can’t
help but think a great tone
has been set for the season
because of it.”
The Outlaws will start
their season with a home
game against Burns on
Friday, September 2. Kickoff
is scheduled for 7 p.m.
