Art at the Ranch
features art, events
One of the oldest and
most enjoyable of traditions
at Black Butte Ranch will be
returning the first weekend in
September.
Art at the Ranch has been
a highlight for the past three
decades and has included
paintings, sculptures, metal
and pottery items, jewelry,
wood crafts, books, fiber
arts, candles, toys and other
exhibits.
New this year is a gallery
show at the Lodge Gallery
running September 2-3, fea-
turing painters, photogra-
phers and mixed media. The
festivities will begin at the
Lodge on Friday, September,
2 with a wine and appetizer
reception between 5:30 and
7:30 p.m., with live music
by Chris Patrick and Selah
Broderick.
During this time guests
can meet the artists and bid
on their works in a silent auc-
tion. During the reception the
founding Art Guild members
will be honored. On Saturday,
September 3, Art at the
Ranch will run from 10 a.m.
to 5 p.m., with live music 11
a.m. to 1 p.m. by singer/song-
writer duo Rindy and Marv
Ross.

Volunteering with
Habitat offers rewards
Many a study found in
medical journals and on
the Internet promote volun-
teering as a road for good
physical and mental health.
If that’s the case, the more
than 250 volunteers with
Sisters Habitat for Humanity
are some of the happiest
and healthiest people in
town.
These volunteers were
honored last week during
Sisters Habitat’s Board of
Director’s Eighth Annual
Volunteer Appreciation
Picnic. The volunteers gave
more than 19,000 hours dur-
ing the past year helping
sort donations at the Thrift
Store and ReStore, build-
ing at the construction site,
and serving on numerous
committees.
Seventy-one people
and two groups were hon-
ored with the President’s
Volunteer Service Award last
week. These Habitat support-
ers were given a certificate
and letter from President
Obama and a bronze, silver

Residents of Sisters
Country have learned to live
with fire. We’ve seen our
share, through more than a
decade of blazes that have
threatened — and in a couple
of cases destroyed — homes,
forced evacuations and
scarred the local landscape.
Living with fire does not
simply mean bowing to its
power — it is possible to
make our homes and com-
munities more resilient. Last
week, Squaw Creek Canyon
Estates celebrated its status
as one of those resilient com-
munities. The residential sub-
division along the Whychus
Canyon rim northeast of
Sisters has become Oregon’s
100th Firewise Community.
“As
a
Firewise
Community, you are a role
model for the way things
should be,” State Forester
Doug Decker told an assem-
blage at the satellite fire hall
in Squaw Creek Canyon
Estates.
Firewise Communities
work together to ensure that
individual properties main-
tain a defensible space and
to encourage the use of fire-
resistant construction materi-
als. Fuels reduction is key to
helping communities weather
the storm of wildfire.
Speakers at last Friday’s
celebratory event quoted
fire incident commanders
who affirmed that Firewise
communities are safer for
residents and for firefight-
ers who enter them to protect
structures during a wildfire.
They assure homeown-
ers that their work makes it
more likely that firefighters
can successfully defend their
homes.
Doug Meyers, a vol-
unteer with the Sisters-
Camp Sherman Rural Fire
Protection District, spear-
headed the effort in his home
community. He noted that not
only are homeowners clear-
ing defensible space around
their own homes, they are
also reducing fuels on 39 un-
built lots. The community
also stepped up to improve
