Star gazing in Sisters
By Jim Anderson
Correspondent
On Saturday night, July
31, the bright parking lights
flooding the Sisters High
School parking area were
switched off so members
and guests of the Sisters
Astronomy Club (SAC)
could set up telescopes and
spend much of the evening
gazing deep into the dark-
ened sky.
This was one of the regu-
lar nights SAC offers anyone
interested in the skies over
Sisters the opportunity to take
advantage of the club-mem-
bers skills and equipment to
enjoy views of the planets
and objects in deep space.
Just as viewers were
going into the Sisters Park &
Recreation District (SPRD)
auditorium for a “here’s what
you’ll see” slide presenta-
tion by SAC member Ron
Thorkildson, Vonnie Suckow
of Sisters looked up at just
the right moment to see the
International Space Station
passing overhead.
“What a grand night
that was,” Suckow said. “I
remember the Bear Major
is made up of stars in the
Big Dipper and how fast the

Cultural events will
light up Sisters
Folks in Sisters will have
plenty of cultural activity to
keep them entertained — and
well-fed — this week.
On August 11, Sisters Park
& Recreation District (SPRD)
hosts their third luau, at
Village Green Park from 6:30
to 8:30 p.m.
Shannon Mokuahi
Rackowski, adult/senior pro-
grams coordinator, a native
Hawaiian, luau organizer and
cook, has named this year’s
luau “Hawaiianous” — of
Hawaiian spirit.
This year ’s entertain-
ment includes Mele’uhane
from Kona, Hawaii, Halau
Uhane Dancers, Kurt
Silva, DJ Chuck Boogie,
Sisters Ukulele Players and
Mailelaulie-Kuuipo-Rapoza-
Mokuahi (Rackowski).
A special treat from Essex,
England will be Coach Steve
Pearl, eight-time national
basketball championship
coach and his team of young
ladies known as the Southend
Swifts. This will be their first
luau, and they will be helping
out with serving food.
Tickets are available
at SPRD, online at www.

Habitat breaks ground on new home
“The compassion for oth-
ers and the eagerness to help
better our community that
is exhibited by all Habitat
volunteers is amazing,”
future Habitat homeowner
Dawn Holmes said during a
groundbreaking last week.
David and Dawn Holmes
broke ground on the third
parcel at Sisters Habitat
for Humanity’s Village
Meadows neighborhood
while they were surrounded
by many friends and volun-
teers who help make it pos-
sible for families to own
affordable homes in Sisters.
“There are a lot of self-
less acts and kindness from
everyone down at the job-
site,” David said of the many
volunteers who help build
the homes. “I think it’s pretty
uncommon for most commu-
nities to be that giving. This
is a pretty special Habitat,
and the support we’ve
received from this commu-
nity is something we’ve not
experienced elsewhere,” he
said.
When a family is selected
for the homebuilding pro-
cess, the future homeowners
are teamed up with family
partners. These are Habitat
volunteers who help the fam-
ily navigate the homebuild-
ing road. Family partners
for David and Dawn are
Jerry and Rosalie Hanford
and Lauren Beyerinck. Each
partner shared encouraging
words for David and Dawn
before the couple placed
the golden shovel into the
ground. Dawn brought a
burning bush plant to the cer-
emony and had asked every-
one to put a handful of dirt
from the property in the pot.
She hopes to plant the bush
when they move into the
home next year.
The future home for the
Holmes family will be the
third house built in the 17-lot
