donald m. oliver
February 11, 1929 — June 9, 2016
Donald M. Oliver, 87,
of Sisters, died June 9, his
wife Ellen by his side. Born
in Elkins, West Virginia he
graduated from Parsons
High School, attended
Michigan State University
and received a degree in
forestry. He was called up
for service in the Army
and served in the Korean
Conflict as a platoon
leader of the 72nd Tank
Battalion. After his ser-
vice he received a master’s
degree in forest genetics at
CSU. Don worked on the
Siuslaw National Forest,
retired in Corvallis in 1984,
then moved to Sisters in
1985.
Don was a founding
member of the Cascade
Horizon Band, playing the
baritone. He was PER of
the Redmond Elks. He was
active in the Sisters com-
munity, volunteering in the
Sisters High School wood-
working shop, helping to
build the first HfH home
in Sisters and serving on
the Crossroads Property
A ssociation Board of
Directors. He volunteered
at the Red Cross.
Don enjoyed the out-
doors; sailing, canoeing,
hiking, biking, hunting. He
was a fine woodworker,
building beautiful furni-
ture. He liked to say, “If
it’s not perfect, it’s not
done.”
Don and Ellen were hap-
pily married for 60 years.
He is survived by his
wife, Ellen; three children,
Judy Oliver-Rose, Mary
Ellen Pastorino (Paul),
James Oliver (Christine);
and eight grandchildren.
A celebration of his life
will be held at 11 a.m. on
Sunday, July 31, at FivePine
Lodge and Conference
Center in Sisters.
The family requests that
any donations be sent to the
Cascade Horizon Band or
BrightSide Animal Center
in Redmond.

McGovern died peacefully
at her home in Sisters on
June 27.
LaVaughn moved to
Sisters six years ago to
be near her daughter and
grandchildren. LaVaughn
is survived by her daughter,
Stacy Stabil Hougham; son-
in-law Joey Hougham; his
son, Wyatt; and LaVaughn’s
grandchildren, Olivia and
Faith. Her son, Tony, and
his wife, Rhonda, and their
children Freddie, Brian and
Jade; as well as LaVaughn’s
adorable granddaugh-
ter, Elena, live in Sweet
Home, Oregon. LaVaughn
is additionally missed and
survived by her dear com-
panion, Earl Hougham; his
son, Donn; wife, Marni; and
Donn’s children Tessa and
Brandon.
Her special friends
Billie and Adrienne were
some of the last people to
share a conversation with
LaVaughn, and their friend-
ship was truly treasured.
LaVaughn had many friends
and loved ones, and her
tenacity, resilience, huge

LaVaughn was sober
more than 20 years, and
helped countless others
in their addiction strug-
gles. Donations made to
Alcoholics Anonymous
in her name would be a
gift LaVaughn would truly
appreciate. No memorial
has yet been scheduled, but
her life will be celebrated
by friends and family later
this summer. Please con-
