Concert will benefit
veterans’ organization
The Anvil Blasters
will host a benefit con-
cert at The Barn on Friday,
June 17 at 7 p.m., in sup-
port of Sisters-based non-
profit Warfighter Outfitters.
Warfighter Outfitters was
founded by veterans and is
run by veterans to provide fel-
low veterans with the oppor-
tunity to get into the outdoors
and pursue activities they
love — despite troubled times
and injuries. The mission of
Warfighter Outfitters is to get
combat-wounded veterans
out on the land hunting, or on
the waters fishing, or out into
our nation’s National Parks
for engagement missions,
where veterans from around
the country assemble to assist
local officials in understaffed
improvement projects.
A $20 suggested donation
at the door will go directly
to Warfighter Outfitters, and
additional contributions are
welcome.
“Warfighter Outfitters is
a fantastic outfit doing re-
ally valuable work,” said
Jim Cornelius of The Anvil
Blasters. “It’s local and every
cent of contributions gets
used on the ground, so there’s
a lot of bang for every buck.
We’re proud to do something

Schools move to
semester schedule
By Jim Cornelius
Correspondent
Sisters schools will move
to a semester schedule in
the 2016-17 school year.
Superintendent Curt Scholl
announced the change from
trimesters to semesters
in a letter to parents and
community members on
Friday.
“To start this school year,
it was evident that our cur-
rent schedule at the high
school was creating vari-
ous issues with allowing our
students being able to have a
full schedule,” Scholl wrote.
“A combination of loss of
staff, blocked classes, and
scheduling core classes for
all three trimesters contrib-
uted to this issue.
“We also had a conflict
at the beginning of the year
with staff members that are
shared between the high
school and middle school.
The late-start schedules in
the middle school and high
school did not align with the

Ambulance gets new life in Sisters
By erin Borla
Correspondent
A Sisters-Camp Sherman
Rural Fire Protection District
ambulance received new life
through the East Cascades
Area Health Education Center
(ECAHEC) based out of St.
Charles Medical Center in
Bend.
The ambulance, which
had been surplused by the
fire district, sat unused behind
Sisters High School. Once a
trimester the ECAHEC visits
Sisters High School to work
with health teacher Heather
Johnson and her students,
giving them real-life experi-
ences with one of their 10
healthcare mannequins. Jeff
Papke, executive director
for the ECAHEC, saw the
ambulance and the wheels
started turning.
“We needed a way to trans-
port our mannequins to work-
shops across the region,” said
Papke. “Deputy Chief Tim
Craig, Chief Roger Johnson,
and the board of directors of
the Sisters-Camp Sherman
Rural Fire Protection District
were instrumental in helping
facilitate getting the ambu-
lance donated.”
The ECAHEC, supported
by the St. Charles Foundation,
provides workshops and
classes for students in grades
9-12 throughout Deschutes,
Jefferson, Crook, Grant,
Lake, Klamath and Harney
counties. Through their mis-
sion they hope to build path-
ways for students to careers,
professionals to communities
and communities to better
health. The group also works
with fire stations and other
personnel to help current
first-responders improve
their skills through very real
simulations.
The mannequins are more
than just “resusci-anne” CPR
mannequins. The two most
technical mannequins each
cost around $100,000. They
are operated wirelessly with
two computers. One com-
puter shows the vital signs of
the patient, while the other is
operated at a distance. Those
running the simulation can
have the mannequin speak to
caregivers; show signs of dis-
tress including the lips turning
blue; demonstrate breathing
