Mele’uhane to
perform at SPRD luau
Keikilanii and Leokani
L i n d s e y, k n o w n a s
Mele’uhane — a father-and-
son duo from the Kona side
of the Big Island of Hawaii
— will be the special guest
artists for Sisters Park &
Recreation District’s (SPRD)
annual Hawaiian luau, ac-
cording to Shannon Mokuahi
Rackowski, adult/senior
programs coordinator for
SPRD.
The Lindseys are descen-
dants of a prestigious and
talented family — six genera-
tions of Hawaiian storytellers
who lead the way with a new
spin to Haku Mele (Hawaiian
Songwriting).The father-and-
son duo celebrate their love
of Ohana (family) and culture
by continuing to Holo Mua
(move forward) with new
original meles (songs), tradi-
tional Hawaiian favorites, and
their unique interpretations of
classic compositions.
“Every year I try to bring
a new huli (twist or turn) to
our luau, and this year is no
exception with Mele’uhane,”
Rackowski said.
“I was fortunate to meet
Micheal John Alayon aka
Hawaiian Mike of Positive
Island Vibrations, who pro-
motes different artists from
the Hawaiian Islands, and as
Mike being a local boy said,
‘No Worries Auntie,’ mean-
ing that all young people of
Hawaiian upbringing refer
to older generations as auntie
and uncle which is a sign of
respect!”
Every year I try to
bring a new huli (twist
or turn) to our luau, and
this year is no exception
with Mele’uhane.
— Shannon Rackowski
The luau is set for
Thursday, August 11, at
Village Green Park from 6:30
to 8:30 p.m. SPRD decided
to start ticket sales on May 1,
Lei Day in Hawaii, and an ar-
ticle came out in The Nugget
on April 25, which brought
a lobby full of people want-
ing to buy tickets on that
day.
“Our first year brought
over 300, last year over 400,
this year I will be cooking for
500. With ticket sales already
at 30 percent sold, we might
just sell out this year,” said
Rackowski.

transgender bathroom and dressing room is-
sues in The Nugget of May 25. Disturbing and
offending:
1. Guilt by association: Linking transgen-
dered people in the same paragraph with “per-
verts” and “pedophiles.”
2. Self-appointed sexist “protectors”:
Women who have more male characteris-
tics, transgender or not, are being harassed
or attacked when going to the restroom. Let
women learn to protect themselves.
3. Wrong abusers: Young children are al-
most always accompanied by an adult in pub-
lic bathrooms. The sexual abuse Ms. Miller
mentions is most often not by teen peers but
by family, pastors, and politicians. There are
already laws to deal with this behavior.
4. Prejudice/sexism: “Separate dress-
ing arrangement for transgendered people.”
Separate but equal? Uh uh.
5. Not reputable source: The American
College of Pediatricians (the ACP) is, in fact,
13
a small conservative advocacy group that has
been labeled as a hate group; it only speaks for
200 members.
6. Not healthy at all: LGBTQ cannot be
converted into straight. This only forces them
to pretend at great cost.
7. Sexist, prejudiced and judgmental:
Gender-confused. A more respectful term is
Transgender.
8. Patronizing: “…deserve our compas-
sion.” It is the judgmental person that needs
that compassion and education, for their rejec-
tion and their hate, their pity and their fear.
9. Prejudice: “Forcing people to feel vio-
lated, uncomfortable and unsafe will decrease
acceptance of transgenders.” First, no one
is forcing you to feel that way. That is your
choice. Second, insert “blacks” instead of
“transgenders” into that statement and think
back to our history.
10. All in all, this article reflects this soci-
ety’s prejudice, ignorance and fear of people
who are different from us, and fear of change.
Fear is “False Evidence Appearing Real.”
