• Mayor Chris Frye
signed the contract appoint-
ing Rick Allen as a limited-
duration city manager for a
set term through November
18, 2016 or upon termination
at a point, whichever comes
earlier.
Allen hit the ground run-
ning last Thursday with a
morning council meeting
and workshop, tour of the
city, planning commission
workshop, budget commit-
tee meeting in the evening,
and meeting all of the staff.
One of his first duties will
be to circulate a Request for
Qualifications (RFQ) for a
new city attorney. (See story,
page 1.)
Allen’s position is part-
time, so he will probably be
physically in Sisters two,
sometimes three, days a
week. One of those days will
be Thursday due to council
meetings, workshops and
planning commission meet-
ings. The other day may be
Monday. Allen reminded the
council this will be a fluid
time that will require flex-
ibility on everyone’s part.
“This is a six-month
interim time. Some proj-
ects may just sit. It will not
be business-as-usual. Some
things may have to take a
back seat,” Allen said.

Sisters Park & Recreation
District (SPRD) held a grand
opening for their community
preschool’s new playground
on Thursday, May 19.
The community Preschool,
housed at Sisters Elementary
School, was able to adapt a
small gravel section behind
the classrooms to a new
dynamic play area over the
course of the last several
months, Thursday repre-
sented their community grand
opening.

member. “I loved building the
castle on the stage with the
new puzzle pieces.”
Students could be seen
bouncing on ride-on toys,
playing in the new outdoor
playhouses, making water
and sand flow with the new
play tables, and even planting
flowers.
One of the most unique
items is an eight-foot-long
play wall — complete with
everything a young pre-
schooler would want to try to

For a large contingent of
Sisters area veterans, their
lives continue to be filled
with the kind of mission and
purpose that drew them to
serve their country.
The Sisters chapter of
Band of Brothers filled the
banquet room at Takoda’s on
Saturday evening for an event
marking Armed Forces Day.
Co-founder Tom Barrier
recalled starting the chapter
with Dave Culver and Merle
Holm. Now it’s grown to
60 members, devoted to fel-
lowship and helping veter-
ans and others in the Sisters
community. It’s all about con-
tinuing the ethic of service to
others.
“It gives you such an
uplift to know you did some-
thing for somebody today,”
Barrier said.
To help fund their pro-
grams, veterans from Band of
Brothers put in 170 volunteer
hours selling raffle tickets at
Ray’s Food Place for an elec-
tric bicycle. They raised a
gross of $4,800.
Jim Mandel rode the bike
over to Takoda’s from Ray’s
for Saturday’s raffle drawing.
“It rides like a dream,”
he said. “I wanted to keep
going.”
Sisters resident Tom Buck,
owner of Cork Cellars, was
the winner.
Veterans from Sisters
VFW Post 8138 and
American Legion Post 86 will
host Memorial Day obser-
vances at Sisters’ Village
Green Park at 11 a.m. on May
30, featuring keynote speaker
Karl Baldessari, Captain,
U.S. Coast Guard, Retired.
This is the 150th anniver-
sary of the national holiday,
which was originally estab-
lished to honor Civil War sol-
diers who died in the conflict.
Sisters residents and visi-
tors are invited to attend
the special event and a bar-
becue lunch following the
observances.
