Circle of Friends hosts
annual luncheon

Circle of Friends hosted
theirannualfundraisinglun-
cheonlastweek.Therewere
nearly100communitymem-
berspackedintoTheBelfry
tosupporttheworkofCircle
ofFriends,alocalnonprofit
matchingSistersyouthwith
volunteeradultmentors.
Duringtheluncheonpro-
gram, guests were given a
glimpseintooneofthecom-
munity-based opportunities
shared by some of the chil-
drenandtheir“Friends.”
Two of the Circle of
Friendsyouthwerepresentto
presentanartshowanddem-
onstratetheartprocessthey
andtheir‘Friends’havebeen
learningwiththeirartteacher,
Annie Painter. In addition,
Painterspokeattheluncheon
about her own experience
with a lifelong mentor and
howthatrelationshipinspired
her throughout her life and
“nudged” her when needed.
Annie donates a significant
portionofherartstudiotime
toCircleofFriendsandshe
sharedherexperiences,pro-
cesses and photos of work-
ingwiththeyouthandtheir
Friends.

floodplain, here,” Egertson
said. “In these reaches, we

Egertson said that the
canyon in the upper part of
thePreserveandatRimrock
Ranch is quite a bit nar-
rower than at Reach 4 and,
therefore,wouldrequireless
extensive restoration work.
“Therearesomeareasthere
andatRimrockRanchwhere
thestreamhasalreadydonea
goodjobofrestoringitself,”
shesaid.

ablyfourorfiveyearsaway.
Egertson explained that the
workattheranchwouldprob-
ablybeamixtureofrechan-
neling, plus preserving and
enhancing natural processes
alreadyunderway.
In preparation for this
summer’s work, hundreds
of downed trees with root-
balls still intact have been
trucked to the site in prepa-
ration for the creation of
diversions and log jams in
thenewchannelsandmean-
ders.“We’vebeenstockpiling
thingsastheybecomeavail-
able.” Egertson explained
that the downed trees have
beensalvagedfromunrelated
constructionjobsaroundthe
area.
This year’s project area
is not open to the public,
althoughitisenvisionedthat
part of the uplands would
includeportionsofaplanned
hikingtrailtoconnectallthe
segments along the lower
creek.Theprojectarea,how-
ever,canbevisitedbytaking
partinoneoftheDLT’sfree
guidedtours.
This initial project area
includes beautiful stands of
orange-barked ponderosa
pines and lush grasses, so
extracarewillbeneededto
preserve some of the prime
habitat already present.
Egertson said that 200,000
individualnativeplantswere
placed in Camp Polk, and
a similar planting regimen
willtakeplacehere,aswell;
but,shesaid,theprocesswill
be much more swift on this
