Short-handed boys lacrosse team finishes season
By Rongi Yost
Correspondent
The boys lacrosse team
played their final two games
of the season last week.
Sisters lost 16-4 at Ridgeview
on Wednesday, May 11, and
two days later fell 21-10 at
home against Cleveland.
In Tuesday’s action,
Samson Magnus scored two
very hard-fought unassisted
goals for the Outlaws in
the first quarter. Ridgeview
put three in the goal for a
3-2 lead at the close of the
quarter.
The Ravens added three
goals in the second quarter
for a 6-2 lead at the half.
Sisters got an unassisted
goal from Bennett Lewis
in the third quarter and an
unassisted goal from Ethan
Morgan in the fourth. Both
goals were shot from outside
at sharp angles that were able
to beat the Ridgeview goalie.
Ridgeview added six goals
in the second half for their
16-point finish.
Coach Eric Wentzel said,
“In this game we only had
one penalty the entire game,
and we were pleased with
that. The coaching staff has
been focused on our style of
play, and when we have lots
of penalties it hurts the whole
team.”
“We only had three subs
for the whole game, which
impacted our performance on
a warm day,” added Wentzel.
“This has been a struggle
in a number of our games

this year. You need subs so
the players on the field are
always fresh.”
Matt Harris had a strong
defensive game for the
Outlaws with 11 ground-
balls. Harris has been the
Outlaws’ groundball leader
most every game this season.
Wentzel told The Nugget that
Harris is only a freshman and
he’s expecting great things
from him in the coming
years.
Two days later in their
game against Cleveland, the
Outlaws kept hard at it until
the final whistle blew.
Magnus led the team
in scoring with six goals,
and Wentzel was quick to
comment on his play.
“It was hard to ignore the

play of Samson Magnus,”
said Wentzel. “All of his
goals were hard-fought with
Samson playing from behind
the goal, beating his defense
and taking many diving shots
to get it past the goalie.”
Keaton Green scored two
goals for Sisters. Green’s
goal in the first quarter got

Green’s other goal came off a
Trey Stadeli assist.
Stadeli also scored two
for Sisters, one unassisted
and one off a David Keeton
assist.
“Trey had one of his best
games of the season with two
goals and one assist,” said
Wentzel. “The performance
ends the season on a high
note.”
David Keeton led the team
with seven groundballs, and

Gabe Patton won 10 face-
offs.
Wentzel said, “The team
worked hard all game,
and didn’t give up, which
was demonstrated by the
continued scoring throughout
the game. The team took a
total of 44 shots, so the effort
to score was there. We just
faced a pretty good goalie.
“We scooped up 33
groundballs, which is a key
to controlling the game,
unfortunately, we had 21
turnovers which led to a
number of Cleveland’s
goals.”
Wentzel made special
note of senior captain David
Keeton, who did a fabulous
job leading the young defense
throughout the season.
Although the young
Outlaw squad didn’t tally
many victories this season,
they united as a team,
strengthened their skills, and
show great potential for the
coming years.
“Even in our toughest
games and moments in the
season, the team unity was
strong,” said Wentzel. “I
did not see any fighting or
blaming. The coaches can
always say this team has
great potential since we are
so young, but when you
hear it from the teams and
fans of your competitors it’s
something to take note of.
“In our final game, we
played with one senior,
seven sophomores, and seven
freshmen. With such a young
team we have a chance to
coach and play together for
a number of years ahead,”
added Wentzel. “Due to
injuries or grades, we were
missing one additional senior,
two sophomores and one
freshman.”
