‘Darkness to Light’
training on tap
By jim Cornelius
News Editor
Protecting children is a
sacred duty for every adult,
and this duty is highlighted
in Child Abuse Prevention
Month.
Leveraging off the height-
ened awareness of the issue,
Sisters Park & Recreation
District, Circle of Friends and
KIDS Center are co-spon-
soring “Darkness to Light –
Stewards of Children” train-
ing at SPRD on Saturday,
April 16. The training is free
and open to the public, but
pre-registration is requested.
Contact Kelly Davis-Martin
at 541-588-6445 or email
kelly@acircleoffriends
oregon.com.
Davis-Martin is associate
director of Circle of Friends,
a youth mentoring program
in Sisters. She urges mem-
bers of the Sisters commu-
nity to avail themselves of the
opportunity.
“It’s an incredible train-
ing,” she said. “It’s intended
for any adult.”
Attitudes and cultural
mindsets have shifted in
recent years, redefining what
is appropriate in interaction
with children. The training

• Last week, one of the
oldest ponderosa pines in the
city had to be removed due
to disease and bug infesta-
tion. A large crowd gath-
ered in Creekside Park to
bid farewell to this forest
giant. A “cookie” section of
the tree has been saved and
will be displayed by cutting
a V-shape in the remaining
stump and setting the section
up on its side. It will be var-
nished to protect it from the
weather. Visitors to the park
will be able to count the rings
(well over 400) to estimate
the age of the tree and appre-
ciate its longevity.
• The newly established
Housing Policy Board will
act in an advisory capacity
to Sisters City Council on
issues regarding housing in
Sisters. Applications are cur-
rently being accepted for four
positions to be filled by resi-
dents who reside within the
city limits and three who are
residents of greater Sisters
Country. Applications are
available on the City website,

Sisters Habitat for
Humanity is seeking women
volunteers for its 5th annual
National Women Build Week,
May 3-7.
Sisters Habitat is one of
more than 300 Habitat orga-
nizations nationwide hosting
Women Build projects with
support from Lowe’s, a long-
time partner in the event.
Women of Sisters will
gather to help build the homes
for Alexandra and Jessica
Lantaler and Selah Broderick.
The future homeowners will
both be working at the jobsite
during the week. Interested
volunteers can sign up for a 9
a.m. to 12:30 p.m. shift during
one of the five days.
“I would like to say that
I am deeply grateful for
the support of everyone at
Habitat. The volunteers are
truly inspiring, and doing
good work to serve and ben-
efit others,” Broderick said.
Construction or home-
improvement experience is
not necessary, however, a
mandatory orientation will
take place Thursday, April
28, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the
Sisters Library. Volunteers
are also encouraged to attend
the “How to Safely Use Hand
Tools” class Saturday, April
30 from 10 a.m. to noon at
the jobsite: 402 and 412 N.
Desert Rose Lp.
Lowe’s helped launch
National Women Build Week
in 2008. This year, Lowe’s
contributed $2 million to
National Women Build week,
and $5,000 of that contribu-
tion will be donated to Sisters
Habitat.
Sisters Habitat hosted its
first Women Build event in
2012, and since then local
women have worked on seven
homes.
Registration is required for
Women Build. Those inter-
ested can call Sisters Habitat
for Humanity at 541-549-
1193 or email marie@sisters
habitat.org.
