Boys tennis plays short-handed
By Rongi yost
Correspondent
The boys tennis team
lost 7-1 to Stayton at home
at Black Butte Ranch on
Thursday, March 31. Sisters
was forced to concede the
No. 4 singles and doubles
matches because the Outlaws
were short-handed.
Isaiah Chapen and Jed
Kizziar were Sisters’ lone
winners in the match. The
duo defeated Tim Coblentz
and Hayden Stuckart 6-1,
6-4.
Coach Bim Gander said,
“Isaiah’s consistency and
Jed’s court coverage and sev-
eral winners down the middle
were decisive. It was a great
effort by our young rookies.”
Jonny Gurney played a
good match at No. 1 singles,
but came up on the short end
3-6, 6-2, 3-6.
“Jonny was ultimately
frustrated by a human back-
board at No. 1 singles,” said
Gander. “Jonny’s good shot-
making was often bettered by
some incredible retrieving by
his very fit opponent.”
Michael Commins played
the longest match of the day,
which went two-and-a-half
hours, and was serving for
the match at 5-4 in the third
set. Commins lost to Ronaldo
Salcedo with scores of 4-6,
6-4, 5-7.
“Michael was frustrated
when a painful blister broke
on his right (playing) hand
at that crucial moment in the
third set,” said Gander. “But,
these types of experiences
will stiffen the resolves of our
players going forward.”
Th ere will be a
celebration of life for
Harold and Jean
O’Hara,
Saturday, April 9,
from 1 to 3 p.m.
at the Sisters
Community Church.
Everyone is welcome.

Gander commented on
third-set losses.
Gander said, “A decisive
third-set loss in a long match
is often the result of either
physical or mental fatigue,
but in this case, I think that
Stayton’s greater playing
experience (six matches so
far this season vs. only one
for Sisters) in this young
campaign was a factor.”
On Saturday, the Outlaws’
No. 1 and No. 2 singles and
doubles players partici-
pated in the White Buffalo
Invitational.
Jonny Gurney placed sev-
enth at No. 1 singles and Josh
Kizziar placed ninth at No. 2
singles.
In doubles action, Jacob
Gurney and Pierce Wehrle
placed ninth at No. 1 doubles,
and Isaiah Chapen and Sean
Willitts placed tenth in No. 2
doubles.
The Outlaws were to play
at home against Cascade on
Tuesday, April 5. Sisters’ next
match will be Tuesday, April
12 at Corbett.

Students invited to
apply for scholarships
Students may apply now
for a Roundhouse Foundation
Enrichment Experience
Scholarship. Awards for this
scholarship may be used for
workshops, camps, seminars,
internships or other activi-
ties in pursuit of interest and
career technical education
discovery. Students in grades
9-12 are eligible to receive one
scholarship per year, including
summer programs (subject to
funding availability).
Lauren Wattenburg said,
“The (Texas Ballet Theatre
Summer) intensive was my
first major program far away
from home for an extended
amount of time, so I had to
learn how to cope through
the ups and downs, while in
a new place. I learned how
to be more independent and
responsible...”
Ashley Adams attended
the Willowpark Art Camp
Apprentice Assistant
Internship. “I have learned
that I am really good at con-
necting with kids, and they
learn from me well.
“I now have decided where
I want to go to college, and I
have a much more clear idea
of what my future entails,” she
said.
“I took away so many
things that I will use forever
in my journey of life. Musical
theater has taught me more
about myself and what I can
do. After walking away from
this camp I was inspired to
continue with this side of the
arts because I finally found a
place where I feel I belong,”
said Alana Lukens, who
attended the UCLA Music
Theatre Camp.
