By Ceili Cornelius Correspondent Sisters High School student Logan Miller was involved in a serious auto accident on icy roads on January 6. Miller was in the hospital for six weeks, with a severe head injury requiring life-saving surgery. Logan was able to go home on February 22. Logan has had endless amounts of support through- out his remarkable recov- ery. Student art on display at Sisters Library Correspondent March is Student Art Exhibit Month at Sisters Library and Sisters’ next gen- eration of artists is marching ahead, inspired by ancient and contemporary arts. The Computer Room blasts color, with Clay War- burton’s 4th grade students’ bold abstract paintings based on Japanese kanji, logo- graphic Chinese characters used in the modern Japanese writing system. Each symbol represents a word, such as “cow” or “fire” or “tree.” A haiku, a 17-syllable poem in three lines (5-7-5), accompa- nies each painting, and gives a clue to identify the kanji: For a “fire” kanji: Black and burning wood, Warms my house in the winter. The Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday morn- ing that Cheryl Waldron of Bend was arrested after being indicted by a grand jury on 27 felony counts of Aggravated Identity Theft, Aggravated Theft in the First Degree and Forgery in the First Degree. Warburton explained that four years ago, on a trip to Japan, he became fascinated by the symbols in the written language. A Japanese friend drew out some simple kanji, which Warburton brought to his classroom. For this project, each student picks a kanji, and then writes the haiku, which as a riddle, can- not use the actual word. Then creativity continues with big sheets of black paper and bold colors. About half of the kanji paintings are hung in the library and the other half are See StudeNt art on page 31 Firefighters take on stair challenge Fourteen local firefighters from the Black Butte Ranch, Cloverdale, and Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire Districts trav- eled to Seattle last weekend to participate in the 25th Annual Firefighters Stairclimb spon- sored by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This year, Sisters Country firefighters were able to raise over $25,000 for this worthy cause, thanks to the kindness and generosity of the commu- nity and visitors. As of Monday morn- ing the team of firefight- ers was in 10th place for fundraising among teams from over 300 different fire departments. Firefighters competed with more 1,900 other fire- fighters from six countries and 26 states for time in the 69-story climb. Last year this event raised over $2,000,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Efforts to find a cure have borne fruit in recent decades. In 1960, the most common type of leukemia had a 3 per- cent cure rate among chil- dren. Today the cure rate is at 90 percent.
