Sisters riders shine at OHSET

from their mission at the
firstCentralDistrictOHSET

EquestrianTeam)meet,held
over the weekend at the
Deschutes County Fair and
ExpoCenter.
Friday’sweathertestedthe
mettleofalltheathletesfrom
the14schoolsinthedistrict.
They had to compete in the
outdoor arena for several
eventsuntiltheywereableto
moveinside.
They were positive and
gave it their best effort.

Therewerenocomplaints
about having to perform in
ski team conditions. She
added that the 15-member
teamdidextremelywellfor
the first meet. Several ath-
letes were having their first
OHSET experience, and it
takes a while to settle in to
the energy and rhythm of
the meets. In the individual
events,there’salongperiod
ofwaitingaroundforafew
minutesofcompetition,and
thatcanbehardonnervesfor
theuninitiated.There’splenty
of encouragement from the
sidelines, though, during
thosemomentsofeffort.
Sisters’solemaleOSHET
athlete, freshman Jackson
Robinson,isanovicehorse-
man and spent the meet
observing rather than com-
peting. He’ll be entering
competitioninthenextmeet.
Robinson is using an expe-
rienced horse named Grey,
owned by former OHSET
athlete Hayden Wester, and
said, “The best part of the
meet has been just hanging
outwiththerestoftheteam.”
OHSET meets are three
fulldaysofcompetition,with
a dizzying array of events
ranging from dressage to
steerdaubingandbarrelrac-
ing, showmanship and drill
team.Theathletes,andtheir
horses,areencouragedtotry
somethingtheyhaven’tdone
before, to step out of their
comfort zone in a safe and
supportiveenvironment.
Parental support is vital,
too,witheachschoolrespon-
sibleforrunningoneormore
events. Sisters parents and
supportersfoundthemselves
running the driving event,
teamingwithMt.Viewpar-
ents for steer daubing and
ropingandoperatingthegate
forteampenning.
