Holiday dance recital wows audience

gonnafindoutwho’snaughty
ornice.
Sisters DanceAcademy’s
WinterDanceRecitalbrought
“NaughtyorNice”toanew
level at Sisters High School
auditoriumonSaturday.
“Our show this year is
themedNaughtyorNice,and
the dancers are either going
tobeonSanta’snaughtylist
or nice list, and your job as
anaudience—especiallythe
kids — is to help me figure
out which of our dancers is
goingtobeonthenicelistor
thenaughtylist,”announced
Lonnie Liddell, owner and
dance instructor at Sisters
DanceAcademy. “I want to
givethankstosomanypeople
whohelpedwithourrecital,
andourlightandsounddirec-
tor,RossGrant,isalsoacru-
cialpartofthewholeshow;he
putinalotofhoursinprepar-
ingfortheperformances,and
thisishissenioryearatSHS.”
Thefirstactdefinitelygot
on Santa’s “nice list.” The
junior ensemble performed
balletto“IHeardtheBellson
ChristmasDay.”
It is a Christmas carol
thatoriginatedfromthe1863
poem “Christmas Bells”
by American poet Henry
Wadsworth Longfellow.
The song tells of the narra-
tor’s despair, upon hearing
Christmasbells,that“hateis
strong and mocks the song
ofpeaceonearth,goodwill
to men.” But, the carol con-
cludes with the bells carry-
ing renewed hope for peace
amongmen.

Children(BetterStartActin’
Nice),” by Grace Potter,
showedbothnaughtyandnice
inatap-danceextravaganza.
“The Nutcracker” is the
Christmasballetthateveryone
knows and loves, and there
probablyisn’tadanceensem-
blethathasn’tbroughtafew
of the musical pieces to life
duringaholidayshow.“The
CandyCaneDance”isoneof
themostathleticintheentire
ballet of “The Nutcracker,”
andthe10Sistersballetdanc-
ers brought down the house
withtheirperformance.
Theaudiencewascharmed
by 12 lil’ jammers perform-
ing a hip-hop version of
“Jingle Bell Rock,” a popu-
lar Christmas song first
released by Bobby Helms
in 1957, following Liddell’s

although the jazz dancers
endeduponSanta’s“naughty
list.”
