Boys hoops takes third at Seaside

Theboysbasketballteam
hadagreattimeattheSeaside
Invitational, held Thursday
throughSaturday,December
17-19.The Outlaws walked
awaywithathird-placefin-
ish.Seasidefinishedfirst,and
Astoriawasrunner-up.
Sisters came out strong
and defeated Castle Rock
(CR)45-38toputthemonthe
winners’sideofthebracket.
It was a very good win for
theOutlaws,whohandedCR
theirfirstlossoftheseason.
The Outlaws held CR to
threepointsinthefirstquar-
ter of play, and finished the
period with an 11-3 advan-
tage,thankstoanoutstanding
defensiveeffort.Sistersstrug-
gledinthesecondquarter,but
heldontoenterthehalfwith
athree-pointlead.
Sisterspulledaheadinthe
third, with Keegan Greaney
andTylerHeadcontributing
mostoftheoffense.Keegan
did a terrific job defending
BrockJohnson,anoutstand-
ingoffensiveplayerforCR.
“Keegan is an incredible
defender,andisreallydoing
agreatjobfortheteam,”said
CoachRandRunco.
The final quarter got a
littlewildduetofoultrouble.
JohnsoncameattheOutlaws
hardandgottotheline,but
Sisters answered back and
held off several runs in the
period.
Greaneyscoredsixofhis
12pointsinthefourthquar-
ter.BenSabawentsix-for-six
fromthelinetoholdthelead
andsealthewin.
Head scored 10 points
and had five rebounds on
the night. Scott Waddell
addedsevenpointsandfive
boards.ConnorLakegavethe
Outlawsgoodminutesoffthe
bench,andSteenJohnsonand
Hayes Moore played great
defense,andledtheteamon
bothendsofthecourt.
In their second game of
thetourney,theOutlawssuf-
fered a tough 51-32 loss to
Seaside.The Outlaws had a
goodstartinthefirstandheld
an11-6leadtocloseoutthe
quarter,butthengotintofoul
trouble,whichaffectedthem
offensively.
Runconotedthatabright
spotinthecontestwaswhen
Steen Johnson stepped up
andplayedmultiplepositions
while the team was in foul
trouble.
Johnsonfinishedthegame
with 10 points andWaddell
recordedeight.
“Seaside is a very good
team, with one of the best
point guards in the state,”
saidRunco.“Theyareaver-
aging75pointspergame,and
wedidanicejobdefensively
againstthem.Itwasatough
game,andwedonotfeelwe
played our best — but we
learnedalot.”
TheOutlawsplayedhard,
butjustweren’tabletoplay
theirgame.Theycommitted
24 turnovers, compared to
Seaside’seight,andwerealso
out-rebounded. Seaside had
27free-throwattemptstothe
Outlaws10.
Sisters bounced back
andwrappedupthetourney
with a 56-36 victory over
Newport,whichresultedina
third-placefinish.
The Outlaws had a slow

Overall, our defense was
solid, and offensively we
moved forward. Each game
had different standout play-
ers. It was a good team
