Artists-in-residence announced
Beginning in January,
Calderawillwelcomevisual,
literary,andperformingart-
ists from around the world
for one-month stays at its
arts center on Blue Lake in
CentralOregon.
While at Caldera, art-
ists, writers, and perform-
ers immerse in their work
to create new books, plays,
music,films,poems,instal-
l a t i o n s , p a i n t i n g s a n d
sculptures.
As Caldera enters its
20th year as an organiza-
tion, itsArtist in Residence
(AiR) program has grown
to include more residents
anddeepcontributionstoits
youthprogram.
Caldera has announced
the artists chosen for the
2016 Artists in Residence
program.Alongwithspend-
ing time developing indi-
vidual works, AiR offer
workshops and presenta-
tionstoCalderamiddleand
high school students. They
also present their work to
the public in a free Open
Studios series, held the last
Saturday of each month of
residencies.

BEND (AP) — Special-
educationfundinginOregon
hasn’tkeptupwithagrow-
ingneedforearlychildhood
intervention for kids with
disabilities or development
delays.
Nearly 12,000 children
across the state qualify for
regular at-home visits with
a specialist or special pre-
school enrollment, and fed-
eral law says eligible chil-
dren must receive that help
immediately, The Bulletin
reported.
Providers across Oregon
a r e a s k i n g l a w m a k e r s
for more money, which
they say will help meet
demand in the short term
and could avoid a poten-
tially costly lawsuit in the
longterm.
Theyarepushingfor$5.4
million to avoid a shortfall
in2015-17andanadditional
$15-20millionforlong-term
improvementstoservices.

gram’s funding was cut
post-recession.
“Butwhathappenedwas
when everything else was
recovering — K-12 got a
nicebumpinfunding—this
programgotleftbehind,”he
said.
Rexford is among those
pushing for additional
funding.
“We’re kind of triaging
thisandtakingitonestepat
atime,”Rexfordsaid.“The
firstthingisweneedtohave
atleasttheresourcestoserve
thekidsthataregettingiden-
tifiednowatamuchhigher
rate.”
