project at The High Desert
Museum.
The Museum is collect-
ing donated blankets with
personalstoriesbehindthem
to be used in a new exhibi-
tion opening next spring.
Now blankets can be safely
dropped off at Sisters Art
Works.
Portland-based artist
MarieWattwillshapesome
300 blankets into a sculp-
ture called Blanket Stories,
atowerthatcarriesthepoi-
gnantstoriesoftheblankets’
owners. The stories behind
theblanketscouldbeasdra-
maticasablanketthattrav-
eledacrosstheOregonTrail
or as common as one that
kept a newborn warm as it
wasbroughthomefromthe
hospital.Combined,theytell
thestoryofthecommunity.

Museum’s exhibition, “Art

The sense of frustra-
tionIfeelaboutthecurrent
state of affairs here in the
U.S.,aswellasglobally,has
definitelydampenedmycel-
ebratory feelings. I finally
cameoutofmyfunkanddid
some minimal Christmas
decoratinglastweek.Alittle
candleglowandafewcol-
ored lights did wonders to
raisemyspirits.
I enjoyed shopping for
my Giving Tree child and
my two sons. But carols
about“peaceonearth,good-
willtomen”seemtoringa
littlehollow,asRepublican
presidential candidates
spreadfearanddivisivebig-
otry. With gun deaths and
terrorismcompetingforthe
headlines, it doesn’t seem
much like a “silent night”

It’sintolerable,withallthe
abundanceinthedeveloped
countriesoftheworld,that
stomachsofstarvingpeople
can’t be filled, even here
in the U.S. Of course, that
effort begins at home and
inSisters—withouryear-
round food banks, school
lunchprograms,andholiday
sharing — we are at least
makinganeffort.
My wish for Sisters is
thatweasacommunityfind
along-termsolutiontoour
needforaffordablehousing,
