Sisters donates ‘Treats for Troops’
The Sisters community
turned Halloween treats into
something more than a week-
end of fun. In just one week,
104 pounds of Halloween
candy was donated by Sisters’
families to be delivered to
troops and veterans this
Veterans Day. The Sisters
Parent Teacher Community
(SPTC) encouraged parents
and students to donate extra
Halloween candy to “Treats
for Troops.”
The SPTC set up collection
boxes at Sisters Elementary
School and a local business for
people to drop off candy the
week following Halloween.
“My kids love to trick-or-
treat,” said Haley Ellis, presi-
dent of the Sisters Parent-
Teacher Community. “We get
so much candy, more than
we can eat! Treats for Troops
allowed us to share our good-
ies for a good cause and begin
a great family conversation
around Veterans Day.”
Candy collected from
Sisters is donated to two orga-
nizations: Caring for Troops, a
nonprofit based in Bend dedi-
cated to supporting men and
women with ties to Central
Oregon that are deployed
overseas; and Operation
Gratitude, another nonprofit
organization that sends over

150,000 care packages annu-
ally to soldiers, sailors, air-
men and marines deployed
overseas, their children left
behind, and to new recruits,
veterans, first responders,
wounded warriors and their
caregivers.
“I only got 43 pieces of
candy this year,” said local
fifth-grader Chloe Frazee.
“But I pulled 15 pieces out for
the troops because they don’t
get to go trick-or-treating. I
want to help people like my
grandpa and many more who
served. I want to show them
how much we love, and care,
and appreciate them.”
Candy was collected,
sorted (chocolate candy
must be shipped separately),
bagged and weighed. Students

and their families were also
encouraged to write letters
and cards to be included with
the packages. All donations
will be delivered to the recipi-
ent organizations this week.
Patrons purchased “empty Bowls,” filled them with soup and helped
sisters FAN (Family Access Network) provide for the community.
