Soup’s on in Empty
Bowls fundraiser
The National Empty Bowls
project is celebrating its 25th
anniversary, and soup’s on as
the project returns to Sisters on
Tuesday evening, November
3, 6 p.m. in the Sisters High
School cafeteria.
Founded in 1990 by art
teacher John Hartom of
Bloomfield Hills High School
in Michigan, empty bowls
began as an effort to help out
with a local food drive. John
had his art students throw, dec-
orate, and fire ceramic bowls.
Staff members from the high
school were invited to come
to the cafeteria to select a
bowl and enjoy a simple meal
of soup and bread. Students
helped with all the setup and
clean-up and listened as John
spoke to the staff about hunger
in their community, thanked
them for their donations, and
had them take their bowls
home with them as a reminder
of those with “empty bowls.”

and compelling stories, and

ducers to deeply rooted tradi-
tional virtuosi to indie-rockers
and more.

At OneBeat performances,
people of all ages and back-
grounds have the rare oppor-
tunity to experience live what
it sounds like when adventur-
ous musicians from different
parts of the world combine
forces, and learn first-hand
about the process of cross-
cultural dialogue and creative
collaboration.

pioneering music diplomacy
program initiated by the U.S.
Department of State’s Bureau
of Educational and Cultural

New equipment bays are up at Cloverdale’s fire station.
Cloverdale bond provides buildings
The Cloverdale Fire
District is moving forward
with improvements from last
year’s bond measure.
The new apparatus bay at
station 601 on George Cyrus
Road now has the wall and
roof structure installed.
“It’s starting to look like a
fire station again,” said Fire
Chief Thad Olsen.
Other monies have been
spent to purchase two new
command vehicles which
were delivered within the
last two weeks. They are cur-
rently in service and awaiting
the installation of reflective
striping on the bodies.
The two new pumper
trucks have been ordered and
are currently in the build-
ing process in Wyoming,
Minnesota. The cab and
chassis are expected to be
completed near the end of
October. At that point the
chassis will be moved to the
Rosenbauer plant in Lyons,
South Dakota, for installa-
tion of the pumps and water
tanks, and completion of the
firefighting body portion of
the trucks. Chief Olsen is
hopeful that the trucks will
be completed and moved
to the dealer in Spokane by
the first of the year for final
outfitting.
The district’s board of
directors has completed
plans for the building at sta-
tion 602, on Cloverdale Road
This project is expected to go
out to bid in the near future
with construction expected to
start during spring 2016.
The district is currently
waiting on the Deschutes
911 system to make a deter-
mination on radio equipment
upgrade specifications before
making a major radio pur-
chase to update existing radio
equipment.
The district board and
volunteers again expressed
their thanks to the commu-
nity for approving this bond
measure.
