SPTC to host ‘Family Math Night’
Scholar explores
Curtis photographs

Scholar Program are pre-
senting “Then and Now:
Edward Curtis, Early 20th
Century Photography and
Contemporary Native
American Photographers’
Responses” by Julia Dolan
at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday,
October 28, at the High
Desert Museum.
Dolan, the Minor White
Curator of Photography at the
Portland Art Museum, will
discuss Curtis’ photographs
for “The North American
Indian” within the larger
context of early 20th-century
photography.
In addition, Dolan will
discuss current works by con-
temporary Native American
photographers Zig Jackson
(Mandan, Hidatsa and
Arikara, b. 1957), Wendy Red
Star (Apsa’alooke, b. 1981),
and Will Wilson (Diné, b.
1969) that directly respond to
Curtis and his photographic
legacy.
Dolan earned a bachelor
of fine arts degree in pho-
tography from the Maryland

School Parent Teacher
Community invites Sisters
families to the first-ever
Family Math Night Thursday,
October 22, at 5:30 p.m.
Family Math Night is free
for all to attend and is sched-
uled from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in
the Sisters Elementary School
commons. Pizza will be avail-
able at no charge. The first 20
minutes of the program SPTC
will provide supervised gym
time for students, allow-
ing parents and caregivers a
chance to learn about math
curriculum and instruction at
Sisters Elementary School.
During the remaining time,
parents and children will
work together on a grade-
appropriate make-and-take
math game to take home.
“This is a fun way to bring
families into the school and
help build a sense of com-
munity at SES,” says Haley
Ellis, president of the SPTC.
“We’ve planned family nights
throughout the year surround-
ing each of the common core
areas – hoping to give parents
and caregivers a chance to get
informed and spend time with
administration and staff, as
Institute College of Art, a
master’s degree in art his-
tory from the Pennsylvania
State University and a doc-
torate degree in art history
from Boston University. She
has worked with photography
collections at the Philadelphia
Museum of Art, the Addison
Gallery of American Art
and the Fogg Art Museum
at Harvard University. As
the Minor White Curator of
Photography at the Portland
Art Museum, she is respon-
sible for researching and
growing the museum’s per-
manent collection and pre-
senting exhibitions based on
the museum’s collection and
important works from public
and private collections from
around the world.
Tickets are $5 for the
public, $3 for High Desert
Museum members, and
students are free with ID

Nancy R. Chandler Visiting
Scholar Program of the
COCC Foundation, the High
Desert Museum, ASCOCC
and OSU-Cascades.

their students doing some-
thing meaningful together.”
The elementary school
Parent Teacher Community
is the result of a group of
parents in 2014 looking
to participate and support
the elementary school on a
broader level. The SPTC is
an all-volunteer group that
meets monthly in The Loft,
above the gymnasium at SES.
Programs supported by the
SPTC include the Scholastic
Book Fair, Sisters Elementary
School Spirit Sale, Holiday
Book Exchange and more.
All funds raised by the SPTC
go to support semi-annual
teacher grants and offset stu-
dent fees.
