Sisters learning to
‘Speak Your Peace’

Watch television news,
look at photographs from
Roseburg during the
President’s visit, listen to tes-
timony at public meetings,
read letters to the editor, or
scan your Facebook page. It
won’t take long to find recur-
rent examples of the uptick
in negative civil discourse
issues locally, statewide, and
nationally.
Over the course of the
past few years here in Sisters,
people have been distressed
over bullying of and by pub-
lic officials, rude comments
and hurtful accusations made
publicly in Nugget letters
to the editor. Lawsuits are
threatened in place of work-
ing toward compromise.
Headlines in The Bulletin
label happenings in Sisters as
hostile and litigious, a reputa-
tion that is distressing many
in the community. There has
developed a sense of helpless-
ness and hopelessness among
a number of ordinary citizens
as to what can be done to
change the polarization and
rancor over so many issues.

Creekside fixes back
on the drawing board

Just when it looked like the
Parks Advisory Board (PAB)
was making forward prog-
ress on the issues surround-
ing Creekside Campground
(CCG), they are back at the
drawing board as the result of
a vote taken at their October 7
meeting.
After more than a year of
board meetings, park visits,
public testimony, staff reports,
petitions, and meetings with
neighbors to the west and
south of the campground, the
PAB voted at their August
5 meeting to recommend to
the Sisters City Council a
one-year interim change in
the ingress/egress patterns
for CCG. All campers would
enter from Highway 20 to
Buckaroo Trail and then take
Desperado into the camp-
ground. All exits from the
CCG would be via Locust
with right-turns-only out to
Highway 20.
In their previous discus-
sions, the PAB decided the
fair interim solution would be
to have all surrounding neigh-
bors — Buck Run, Coyote

Harvest Faire draws crowd on Main

Celebrating a new location
on Main Avenue, the Sisters
Harvest Faire hosted by the
Sisters Area Chamber of
Commerce kicked off its 40th
year on Saturday under sunny
skies.
Thousands of folks from
all over the Pacific Northwest
came to browse through an
abundant harvest of hand-
made items, from handcrafted
masks to whimsical bird-
houses. And with over 175
juried artisan vendors, there
was something for everyone’s
taste.
“We are very happy with
the new location on Main
Avenue,” said Jeri Buckmann,
Sisters Area Chamber of
Commerce event coordinator.
“Fir Street Park is now a part
of it all, and with the stage,
the picnic area and the splash
park it’s a much better setup.
Families can picnic and be a
little more comfortable. And
the band gets an entire stage
for performances. Of course,
the parking is better all the
way around.”
First-time vendor Michelle
Griffin showcased her hand-
made whimsical art and gar-
den finds at her booth, “One
Little Blackbird.”
“I did woodworking out
of my garage for 10 years.
I started with planter boxes
then moved onto birdhouses.
Two years ago I took a weld-
ing class and things took
off from there,” Griffin
explained. “I craft whimsical
birdhouses and they are made
out of recycled elements. I
use rusty hardware for the
perches, and even the paint is
recycled. I am always learning
more skills to incorporate new
things.”
With a unique fashion
approach in mind, new ven-
dor Laura Lee Laroux from
Eugene showcased her “mod-
ern-prairie” style clothing,
“RevivALL Clothing.” She
won Best Clothing Designer
in Eugene three years in a
row.
“I have been designing
clothes for 13 years,” Laroux
told The Nugget. “Everything
