The Sisters Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Thrift Store have Experience Works positions available. Experience Works pro- vides paid community ser- vice assignments at local public and nonprofit organi- zations. With updated skills and training, this could be used as a springboard to permanent jobs with local employers. Gar Slenning and Sharyn Benson, the ReStore and Thrift Store assistant managers, respectively, first started at Sisters Habitat through Experience Works. The experience and training led to full-time jobs. Experience Works is a Senior Service Employment Program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor. Applicants must be unem- ployed, 55, and low income, whose resources fall within poverty guidelines. To see if you qualify and to apply, contact the Oregon State Experience Works office at 1-877-779-7905 or www. experienceworks.org. Correspondent Used to be, Sisters Country businesses and parents were hit hard several times a year with fundraising requests from sports teams across the district. That was before Sisters High School hired co-curricular director Tim Roth four years ago. Roth, as a new hire, was charged with uniting the fundraising efforts of all ath- letics at Sisters High School. Outlaws Together, the cam- paign championed by Roth, is celebrating its fourth year this fall. “The program is really a philosophy — encouraging Cody French, Anessa Stotte, Jaxon Barry, tate Kaczmarek and George Chladek with Master K. Martial artists make strong showing Program brings ‘Outlaws Together’ By erin Borla photo by Jim cornelius By Jim Cornelius News Editor all of our sports teams to work together as a unit,” says Roth. “We are more powerful and effective together than each team on their own.” Outlaws Together fund- raises annually in three ways: Outlaw Cards, Black & White Club memberships, and three separate Bingo Nights held during each sport season. Each of these common fund- raisers supports all athletics, both OSAA sanctioned and club sports, while giving the coaches the opportunity to do fundraisers on their own if they choose. “Our coaches have bought in all the way to the Outlaws See outlAWS on page 24 For young martial artists, there’s no better way to test their skills and their mettle than by entering competition. Several students of Outlaw Martial Arts have made strong showings. Twelve-year-old Anessa Stotte traveled to Austin, Texas, over the Fourth of July holiday to compete in the Junior Olympics. It was her third trip to the events, where she competes in “poomse,” the forms that are an important part of training in taekwondo. Poomse demonstrates stances, punches, kicks and blocks in a set series of motions, which are judged for their fluidity and precision. Stotte also took a silver medal in state competition and sixth place in nationals. “The competition is very stiff, very good,” said Marty Kaczmarek of Outlaw Martial Arts (better known as Master K). “People train all year round for this type of competition.” Stotte underwent demand- ing one-on-one lessons with Master K in the run-up to the competition — and he was impressed with her compo- sure and fortitude in the face of tough critique. “She listens and just tries harder,” Kaczmarek said. “That’s what makes her successful.” “I just love competition because I like to be around people who do what I love to do,” Anessa said. “I like everything about (martial arts). It’s all fun. And you learn manners from it, and being respectful.” She aspires to becoming an eighth-degree black belt in taekwondo. Jaxon Barry, 11, Cody French, 11, Tate Kaczmarek, 11 and 13-year-old George Chladek all traveled to Hillsboro for the September 12 Oregon Open Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Tournament. Outlaw Martial Arts has added BJJ to its curriculum for both youth and adults through an affiliation with the Roy Dean Academy. BJJ is a grappling art, where com- petitors strive to obtain locks on limbs in order to place an opponent in submission or force them to concede or “tap out.” The young grapplers did their relatively young program See CoMpetItIoN on page 29 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
