The Notables offer free
swing band concert
The Notables’ 17-piece
swing band will play a free
concert Sunday, September
27, 4 to 6 p.m.
Shepherd of the Hills
Lutheran Church is host-
ing the outdoor concert to
benefit Circle of Friends, an
organization that mentors
vulnerable children in our
community.
The Notables Swing Band
is a spin-off of the 75-mem-
ber Cascade Horizon Band
and brings back the classic
swing music popularized
by musicians such as Glen
Miller, Duke Ellington and
Count Basie. Swing has been
enjoying a resurgence, and
The Notables are excited to
be part of that trend in Central
Oregon.
Betty Berger has come out
of retirement and is singing
with the band. Many know
her from the 15 years she
led her own band and played
regularly at the Riverhouse in
Bend. Before that she had a
40-year career singing with
bands in Southern California.
Circle of Friends board
members will have informa-
tion available at the event
about their program and
volunteer opportunities. All
donations will benefit the
program.
Shepherd of the Hills
Lutheran Church, located
at 386 N. Fir St. in Sisters,
will hold the outdoor con-
cert in their new events tent.
Refreshments and chairs will
be provided. You may wish to
bring your own lawn chair for
more comfort.

Sisters salutes...
• From the staff and board
of the Sisters Folk Festival:
The 20th anniversary of
the Sisters Folk Festival was
a huge success!
A substantial part of
that success is due to the
efforts of Paul Bertagna,
Nicole Montalvo, and the
entire City of Sisters Public
Works Department. Thank
you for going out of your
way to keep the parks and
town beautiful; help us
out with keys; keep up the
restrooms; and a myriad
other tasks — large and
small — that put the whole
town in its best light for our
festival.
All of us at Sisters Folk
Festival are deeply grateful
for all you do!
• Metolius Property Sales
congratulates our agent
Ross Kennedy, who will be
honored on October 24 in
Ashland by being inducted
into the Southern Oregon
University Sports Hall of
Fame for track and field.
While at SOU, Ross did the
Decathlon and placed sec-
ond in the NAIA National
Championships. Way to go,
Ross — we’re proud of you!
• The Kiwanis Club of
Sisters would like to thank
all the Kiwanis and commu-
nity volunteers who made
the Run to the Top Black
Butte Challenge 10K Run a
success.
In addition, thank you
to our partner, the Sisters
Ranger District, to SPRD for
the use of their buses and to
our sponsors. Proceeds from
the race will support the
Sisters Kiwanis Club schol-
arships and community ser-
vice projects.
• The staff of The Nugget
want to say thank you and
kudos to Audrey Tehan and
the Seed-to-Table program.
What an incredible venture
and accomplishment!
We enjoyed a weekly
delivery of fresh veggies all
summer long, an amazing
variety from the harvest.
We’re sad to see the
bountiful season end, but
want to send a shout-out to
the community: don’t miss
signing up next year. Thanks
again to Audrey and all the
interns.

Basketball for fifth and
sixth grades is being held
in Redmond again this year
through the Redmond Area
Park and Recreation District
(RAPRD).
Sisters has sent kids to
RAPRD for the last several
years to give kids their first
chance at traveling to new
areas to play out-of-area
teams and kids. Last year, the
Sisters community fielded
both a boys and a girls team
at RAPRD. Last year’s par-
ticipation levels boasted
a large number of fourth-
grade kids for the in-district
league and with a number
of players moving into fifth
grade this year, Coach Paul
Patton is hopeful to have two
boys teams in the Redmond
league.
According to Patton,
moving into the Redmond
league provides players with
a host of experiences, which
enhances their athletics.
From meeting new players
and experiencing new coach-
ing styles to preparing for
away games, the experience
the Sisters youth basketball
players gain aids them tre-
mendously as they enter into
middle school basketball in
seventh and eighth grade.
The Redmond Area Park
and Recreation signup dead-
line for basketball is October
4 for boys and December
13 for girls. All interested
families should contact the
RAPRD at 541-548-7275 and
indicate that you are inter-
ested in playing with a Sisters
team.
