Wednesday, September 16, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Library offers digital downloads By diane Goble Correspondent Did you know you could now borrow ebooks from the library and read them imme- diately right on your device with a single click? You sim- ply download OverDrive Read, a browser-based ebook reader that works on most computers, tablets and mobile devices running web browsers with HTML5 support, such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer 10 and above. It’s easy to use — and there are no fines for overdue books. Books expire from you device after three weeks if you don’t renew. Books are available 24/7 and you can check out up to eight ebooks or digital audio books at a time from your computer, tablet or smart phone. OverDrive Read has many of the same features as popu- lar reading apps and ebook readers, like the ability to add bookmarks, search for terms, add notes and highlights, look up words, and change the font. It also offers some extra fea- tures, like fixed-layout sup- port for graphic-heavy ebooks and professional narration for some titles. As long as you have an active Internet See lIBRaRy on page 22 “abandoned Barn” by Ray eyerly. A man of humble begin- nings, with no formal educa- tion, who worked at many trades during his lifetime, might have easily slipped from community memory after dying. For one such man, Ray- mond Leslie Eyerly, his memory lives on here in Sis- ters and more widely through his paintings that provide a glimpse of the rugged coun- try of Central and Eastern Oregon, its landscapes and people. All of his work was the result of his innate artistic tal- ent. The only formal training he had was one year of art school as a young teenager, earned by serving as the school’s janitor. At the time of his death on July 31, 1980, at the age of 85, Eyerly had created over 1,000 pieces of art, includ- ing pastels, pen-and-inks, watercolors and oil paintings. The actual number cannot be accurately estimated because he kept no records of his work and only started numbering some of them later in life. Many of his pieces are cur- rently in museums, private collections, and in the homes of individuals who purchased them off the walls of The Gal- lery Restaurant in downtown Sisters. During those years, his originals sold for $8,000 to $12,000. According to for- mer owner of The Gallery, Jim Cheatham, they usually sold one or two originals a year. Cheatham also kept a box of Eyerly’s prints at the restaurant and sold two or three a day. His talents were recog- nized far beyond Sisters as he won awards, particularly for his use of color. According to Beverly Blodgett’s biography of Eyerly, “A Picture or Two – The Story of Ray Eyerly” (1974) — he became the first artist honored by a resolution in the joint houses of the Ore- gon Legislature. On June 3, 1971, Oregon’s master artist received official State recog- nition with a standing ovation at the Oregon State Legisla- ture and was the first artist in the history of Oregon to be so See eyeRly on page 24 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Sisters Area Photography Club 2nd Wednesday, 4 p.m., Sisters Library community room. 541-549-6157.
