This historical novel is based on the true story of Eliza Spalding. When Eliza was 10 years old, measles and pain, betrayal and mis- understandings between Native Americans and the settlers at the mission brought on a tragedy known still today as the Whitman Massacre. Fourteen people died on November 29, 1847, and 54 others were held hostage for 47 days. Young Eliza Spalding, the only hostage who knew the native lan- guage, was one of them. Later in life, she journeyed back to the site of her harshest memories. Would the journey bring her peace and healing? Refreshments will be served. A $5 admission fee will be refunded when you buy the featured book. Paulina Springs Books is located at 252 W. Hood Ave. For more information call 541-549-0866.
