Kiwanis awards
vocational scholarship
The Sisters Kiwanis
Club awards financial aid
to adults who are seeking
a career change. This pro-
gram, known as the Kiwanis
Career Opportunity Fund
(OCF) assists local adults (25
or older) who are financially
unable to return to school or
retrain for a career change.
Yumi Eykelbosch, a Sisters
resident, was recently awarded
an OCF scholarship that aids
her studies for a B.S. degree in
dental hygiene. Yumi attends
the dental hygiene program
at the Oregon Institute of
Technology in Klamath Falls.
She had worked for several
years, as a dental assistant, in a
Sisters practice but wanted to
advance her career in the field.
When presented with the
OCF award, Yumi was asked
why she was returning to col-
lege. She responded that, as a
single mother, she was having
a tough time financially and
a career as a dental hygienist
would combine stable employ-
ment with a comfortable
income. She also emphasized
that Kiwanis’ financial support
helped make it possible for her
to be a full-time student.

Taste of Sisters benefits Luther Metke’s legacy lives on
food bank, Furry Friends
By Jim Anderson
Tickets are on sale now for
Taste of Sisters, set for Friday,
September 18, starting at
6 p.m.
The event, in its third year,
will be hosted at Eurosports,
featuring food from nearly all
of the restaurants in Sisters,
according to organizer Karen
Kassy. The event is a fund-
raiser for Sisters Kiwanis
Food Bank and Furry Friends
Foundation, which helps fami-
lies in Sisters by offering a pet
food bank, assistance with
spay and neutering, and with
veterinary care for families
with animals in need.
Admission to the event is
on a sliding scale, $15-$50.
That’s to ensure that the event
is accessible to the whole
community, regardless of
means, Kassy explained.
“We want everyone to feel
included and welcome,” she
said. “It’s a win-win all the
way around: participants get
to support our great charities
while trying out all the res-
taurants’ food and our restau-
rants have gained some new
customers from past Taste of
Sisters.”

ment, featuring aerial silks

Last Wednesday was the
130th anniversary of the
birth of Luther Metke, cabin-
builder of Camp Sherman.
A big celebration of his life
was held on Metke Lane in
Metolius. There were sev-
eral presenters providing
information on recreation,
film, wildlife, history and
cabin-building.
There were guided
walks throughout the Metke
Corridor on butterfly and
birding talks, picnicking,
games, and lots of, “Oh, hi
there, haven’t seen you in a
long time,” greetings of old
friends and pals from Metke’s
days of log-cabin building.
There were no airplanes
in 1885, when Luther Metke
was born; the automobile was
shaping up in Henry Ford’s
mind. Earth-moving equip-
ment was powered by horses
and steam engines. Grover
Cleveland was president of a
strong and growing America,
and in the industrial city of
Buffalo, New York, “growth”
was the word of the day.
That same year in that
same city, Luther Metke was
born. Little did he know he
would set a precedent in the
tiny community of Camp
Sherman, Oregon, when he
was in the twilight of his
life. In fact, he was a man
who helped shape the life
and times of Central Oregon
— one of the best log-home-
builders in this neck of the
woods, still at it at 94 years
of age.
Metke, better known by
his grandchildren in later
years as Dar Dar, served in
the Spanish American War as
a teenager.
He came to Oregon in
1907. One of the first jobs
he had when he arrived was
on the road department of
sprawling Crook County
(part of which would become
Deschutes County). He and
his crew engineered the pres-
ent route from Bend to Burns,
which at that time was just a
