Kathleen Keliher’s art
featured in Country Fair

landscapes of Central Oregon.
“When I first started paint-
ing I did watercolor,” she told
The Nugget.
Watercolors are notoriously
finicky. Any misstep can ruin a
painting, making it “muddy.”
“I went to a demonstration
where they used pastels to
revive the whole piece, and I
thought: ‘I could do that,’” she
recalled.
She quickly came to love
the medium for its own sake.

Fair is scheduled for Friday-
Saturday, August 7-8. Friday
evening features an artists’
reception with many of the art-
ists featured in the annual art
show in attendance.
Keliher is a Bend artist, but
she is developing ties to Sisters
Country. She is a member of
the Hood Avenue Art gallery

Chamber comes down
in favor of paved path
The Sisters Area Chamber
of Commerce has lent its sup-
port to a proposed paved path
between Sisters and Black
Butte Ranch.
The board provided a state-
ment of support to Deschutes
County Commissioner Alan
Unger, who has taken on the
role of championing a path.
The board said, “The Sisters
Area Chamber of Commerce
considers the United States
Forest Service and the Sisters
Ranger District a unique part-
ner in our community. Given
that partnership, we are uniting
as a board to stand in strong
support of the proposed paved
path from Black Butte Ranch
to Sisters.”
The path has been a mat-
ter of controversy in Sisters
Country for several years.
Proponents believe it will
enhance community connec-
tions, provide a safe route for
cyclists in the Highway 20
corridor, and enhance tour-
ism. Opponents have raised
concerns about environmental
impact, costs and impacts on
private property in Tollgate
and at Black Butte Ranch.
The Chamber board sees
the path as contributing to
tourism assets.

Kids got acquainted with firefighters at a special sisters library event.
Program introduces kids to heroes

A group of a dozen or so
youngsters gathered outside
the library last Saturday to
“Meet a Real Hero” as part
of the Summer Reading
Program. Several firefighters
from Sisters-Camp Sherman
Fire Department came by
to engage with the kids and
share some fun and some
fire-safety tips.
Community Librarian
Paige Bentley-Flannery
opened the program with
some songs about firefight-
ers sung to familiar tunes like
“The wheels on the fire truck
go round and round...” then
she handed out crayons and
pictures to color. She had a
number of books on display
about firefighters, including
“I Drive a Fire Engine,” “We
Work at the Fire,” and “Let’s
Meet a Firefighter,” which
she encouraged the chil-
dren to check out for more
information.

explained the gear that fire-
fighters wear on the job while
resident volunteer firefighter
Sam Utley donned about 50
pounds of protective boots,
pants, jacket, hood, helmet
and oxygen tank and mask,
which they have to jump into
in 60 seconds when the alarm
goes off at the station.
Their reason for show-
ing the children what a fire-
fighter looks like in full gear
is so they won’t be frightened
if they run into one during
a house fire. They had the
children come up to hug fire-
fighter Utley so they know
this is a friend who has come
to help them if they are ever
