Second-term Sisters City
Councilor Wendy Holzman
has resigned. Her departure
means that only two remain-
ing councilors on the five-
member council — David
Asson and Nancy Connolly
— were elected to their
positions.
In announcing her resig-
nation last Friday, Holzman
cited the need to focus on
helping her daughter recover
from a life-threatening bicy-
cle accident that occurred last
April. Maya Holzman was
completing her PhD work
on the Soviet partisan move-
ment during World War II at
the University of Wisconsin-

Burgstahler seated
on Sisters City Council

relatively new resident of
Pine Meadow Village, was
selected by members of the
Sisters City Council to fill the
seat left vacant by the recent
resignation of Bill Hall.
Hall resigned his posi-
tion in June, after less than a
month on the job, citing undue
levels of stress imposed by a
contentious civic climate in
town.
Burgstahler was sworn in
and immediately took her seat
at the July 23 council meet-
ing. Her “baptism by fire”

It was standing-room-only
in Council chambers Thursday
night, and some heated accu-
sations were thrown out
as the Sisters City Council
unanimously approved the
McKenzie Meadows Village
(MMV) plans for a senior-
living facility at the west end
of town.
That approval in effect
denied the appeal brought
by Pinnacle Alliance Group
regarding the planning com-
mission’s approval on June
18 of MMV’s master plan and
site plan.
The assisted-living facility
involved hearing extended
testimony on the contentious
issue of approving requested
modification to the master
plan for McKenzie Meadows
Village.
She joined her fellow
councilors in a unanimous
vote to approve the modifica-
tion. (See related story, page
1.)
The council will be
required to make another
appointment soon, in the
wake of Wendy Holzman’s
resignation, announced last
Friday (see story, page 1).
Holzman is the third coun-
cilor to step down in the past
four months.
Flight Science student earns wings
Sisters High School Flight
Science student Cammi Ben-
son is the first in the innova-
tive program to complete the
requirements and earn her
private pilot certificate. This
achievement is the culmina-
tion of two years of study,
practice, and preparation.
Benson began the pro-
cess of becoming a pilot as a
sophomore by enrolling in the
Flight Science class offered
at SHS. The year-long course
uses a private pilot ground
school as the curriculum,
which prepared her to take
the Federal Aviation Admin-
istration (FAA) written test.
The test covers all subject
areas relevant to flying an
airplane, including aerody-
namics, aircraft systems and

maintenance, weather and
meteorology, flight planning,
navigation, and regulations.
Benson passed it on her first
try, soon after completing the
Flight Science class.
The program sparked her
fascination with aviation. The
class, which is unique to Sis-
ters High School, provides
an introduction to aviation
through interesting field trips,
