Sisters artists featured Quilt raises funds for firefighters
in Art of the West
This year’s Art of the
West exhibition and auction
at the High Desert Museum
will feature more than 60
works by some 40 artists,
nearly double the number of
pieces included in last year’s
show.
“We are thrilled by the
number of high-quality
works that were submitted
by both local favorites and
prominent artists from out-
side the area,” said Dana
Whitelaw, Ph.D., executive
director of the museum.
The artists include Lillian
Pitt, Sherry Salari Sander,
Kathy Deggendorfer, Mark
Yale Harris, Barbara Slater
and Pat Courtney Gold, to
name a few. “This year’s
show includes a wonderful
array of artistic styles and
media including watercolor,
oil, pastel, photography and
sculpture,” according to
Curator of Exhibitions and
Collections Faith Powell.
The exhibition and silent
auction will kick off with
an artists’ reception on
Thursday, July 30. Artists
Dawn Emerson, Marjorie
Kalama and Gil Dellinger
will be doing live demon-
strations inspired by the
museum’s wildlife, artifacts
and objects. There also will
be live music, food and
beverages.
We are thrilled by the
number of high-quality
works that were submitted
by both local favorites and
prominent artists from
outside the area.
— Dana Whitelaw, Ph.D.
Art of the West culminates
with live and silent auctions
at the museum’s signature
annual fundraising gala, the
High Desert Rendezvous, on
August 29 at the museum.
Proceeds from the gala and
the auctions help support
the museum’s educational
programs.

Corner of Hood & Fir in Sisters
Cloverdale firefighters
raffled off Mary Dement-
Smith’s last completed quilt
at Saturday’s Sisters Outdoor
Quilt Show.
Selling just over 500 tick-
ets during the day, the fire-
fighters raised over $2,000 for
their volunteer association.
Debbie Castle of Fremont,
California, was the winner,
and was reached by telephone
on her way out of town at the
end of the day. She immedi-
ately returned and collected
her prize. Castle, an accom-
plished quilter in her own
right, was overcome with
happiness at winning this
beautiful piece of art.
The quilt had been on dis-
play throughout the day in
front of Melvin’s Fir Street
Market. Melvin Herburger
has provided a place in front
of his store for the last two
years for firefighters to sell
raffle tickets for one of Mary
Dement-Smith’s quilts. This
year the firefighters plan to
use the funds to purchase

high-intensity LED lights

smoke-filled buildings.
Dement-Smith provided a
quilt last year to the firefight-
ers for a fundraiser. After last
year’s success she promised
another quilt for this year’s
show. She was able to com-
plete this quilt prior to losing
her fight with cancer earlier
this year.
Cloverdale firefight-
ers expressed their sincere
thanks to the Smith family
for Mary’s support over the
years.
Anvil Blasters head back to Ranch
The Anvil Blasters will
perform at Black Butte Ranch
on Wednesday, July 22, as
part of a series of free music
events on Wednesdays at the
Lakeside Activities Center.
This family-oriented eve-
ning features music, access
to the climbing wall, and a
chance to enjoy the newly
opened bistro. Families are
invited to dine at the bistro
or bring a picnic out. Bring a
lawn chair or a blanket.
The Anvil Blasters will
serve up their Western
Americana music from 6 to 8
p.m. on what promises to be
a warm summer’s evening at
the Ranch.
The songs of The Anvil
Blasters are peopled with
border renegades and desert
dreamers, poets and pirates
and ghosts of the old, weird
America. It’s a rollicking rec-
ipe of gunpowder, twang and
tequila that has earned The
Anvil Blasters a loyal follow-
ing across Central Oregon.
