Wednesday, July 15, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Oregon Wild official to speak in Sisters By Craig F. eisenbeis Correspondent As part of its continuing quarterly speaker series, the Sisters Trails Alliance (STA) will be hosting a presenta- tion by Oregon Wild’s Central Oregon Field Representative Pam Hardy. She plans to talk about the organization’s efforts to pro- tect National Forests, wild- life and clean water. Some of Oregon Wild’s most recent efforts, such as fighting for designation of new wilder- ness areas near places like Crater Lake, will also be on the agenda. Founded in 1974, Oregon Wild works to inform and involve the public in the important conservation issues in Oregon. The organization believes that Oregon’s wild- lands, wildlife, and waters belong to all of us, and that’s the best way to protect those resources is to keep the public involved and informed. As the organization’s repre- sentative for Central Oregon, Hardy’s work often involves See oreGoN WIlD on page 24 Hayden Homes to discuss development Representatives of the developer Hayden Homes will float alternative ideas for the remaining phases of their housing development on the west side of Sisters on Thursday, July 16. The Sisters Planning Commission will hold a work- shop that evening at City Hall at 5:30 p.m. Representatives from Hayden Homes will be presenting options to the Planning Commission and the public for a revised devel- opment plan for Village at Cold Springs Phases III and VI-VIII. The public is invited to attend and provide their input. The development plan approved by the City of Sisters in 2010 called for 273 total dwelling units, includ- ing 164 apartments and 109 townhouses. Hayden Homes’ development model and area of expertise is in construction of single-family residences. Sisters, like much of the region, currently has an extremely tight rental market and difficulties in providing workforce housing, making the prospect of the construction of more housing of significant interest in the community. The public workshop will be held at 520 E. Cascade Ave. Contact Patrick Davenport, community development director, at 541-323-5219 or pdavenport@ci.sisters.or.us for more information. photo by Jodi sChneider MCnaMee Diane rickenbacher made a special quilt for Ali Mayea. Local receives special quilt By Jodi Schneider McNamee Correspondent Last year at the 39th annual Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show animal portrait quil- ter Diane Rickenbacher of Pollock Pines, California surprised Dan and Stephanie O’Neill, a Sisters couple, with two quilts of their hus- kies Kaiya and Keynu as a gift. What made this story even more unique is that Rickenbacher and the O’Neills were virtual strang- ers and had only met at the quilt show in Sisters the year before. Rickenbacher had been admiring the O’Neills’ two dogs and had taken a couple of snapshots of them with her camera, chatted a few moments and then went back to Pollock Pines after the quilt show. After looking at the photos again back home, Rickenbacher decided to turn the photos into quilts as a random act of kindness, and surprise the O’Neills at next year’s quilt show, if she could find them. And find them she did with the help of Ponderosa Properties Realtor Ali Mayea. “Since we didn’t know where to find the O’Neills, we stopped at Ponderosa Properties to ask around, since we purchased our sum- mer home in Sisters from one of the Realtors there, which always seems to be rented during Sisters quilt show. But nobody knew who the dogs belonged to in the photo I was showing around, except Ali Mayea, who happened to be there at the time,” explained Rickenbacher. Mayea not only knew the O’Neills, the pet par- ents of the two huskies, but hatched an elaborate plan of how to surprise them with See QuIlT GIFT on page 24 SISTERS AREA MEETING CALENDAR Central Oregon Fly Tyers Guild 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For location information: 541-549-2072.
