Wednesday, July 8, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Library hosts big annual book sale By Sue Stafford Correspondent Stop by the lawn in front of the Sisters Library on Quilt Show Day, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to peruse a treasure trove of books at the Friends of the Sisters Library (FOSL) annual book sale. All paperback books are 50 cents, children’s books are 25 to 50 cents, and all hard- cover books are $1. There will also be a special collection of quilting books for $4 to $5 each. Choose from hundreds of books at bargain prices and help support the work of FOSL in supporting the library. The annual sale, which began in the 1990s when the library was located on Main Avenue in what is now the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center, has grown larger every year, rais- ing more than $1,200 last year. “Come down and look at all our quilting books and the wonderful quilt available for raffle, and check out all our great bargain books,” said Sandy Duncan, co-manager of the FOSL Book Corner. Refreshments prepared by FOSL members will be avail- able throughout the day for free as well as water to beat the heat. Gem show dazzles onlookers By Jodi Schneider McNamee Glory Daze will fill town with that rumblin’ sound That rumblin’ sound you’ll hear in Sisters on Saturday, July 18, will be coming from the lovingly built and main- tained engines of dozens of classic cars and hot rods com- ing to town for their annual opportunity to strut their stuff. The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce will host the seventh-annual Sisters “Glory Daze” Car Show on Main Avenue from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dust off your poodle skirts and saddle shoes and head to downtown Sisters. There will be entertainment from professional D.J. RC West of KSJJ-102.9 Sisters Park & Recreation District will host “Beef and Brew” featuring buried beef, “beer keg beans,” and beverages for sale in the parking lot next to Bank of the Cascades. An awards ceremony will take place around 2:45 p.m. and a 50/50 raffle draw- ing will benefit a local non- profit whose mission includes inspiring and empowering positive change in the lives of young people through jobs, education, and stewardship. Registration is open to all makes and models through See CAr ShoW on page 38 Correspondent Sisters Elementary School grounds sparkled in the sunlight for the annual Sisters Roundup of Gems last Thursday at the start of a four-day show. More than 40 vendors set up camp and displayed their unique trea- sures, dug up from around the world. And it was happy digging for rock and gem enthusiasts, or anyone just browsing the shimmering collections. You could find loose beads, rocks and minerals for specimen collecting and cutting, loose precious and semi-precious gemstones from amethysts to moon- stones, settings and findings, fossils, meteorites, tools and books, plus completed pieces of fine, Southwestern Native American jewelry and bead jewelry. Vendors Rick and Ginny Taylor, from Corvallis, mine Sunstone, which is Oregon’s state gemstone. The Oregon sunstone was designated the state’s official gem- stone in 1987. Sunstones are uncommon in their compo- sition, clarity, and range of colors. “It’s the most mined gemstone in the U.S.,” Rick Taylor said. “And Oregon is the only place that the sunstone has been found. Collectors and miners attracted by these sunstones have been a boon to tour- ism in Oregon. The color of a sunstone is determined by the quantity of copper metal found within the stone, which makes it very unique.” Despite the scorching heat, folks still came out to browse and buy to their hearts delight. Richard Anderson, from Waldport, was at his booth showing off one of his many obsidian stone tools, a dagger which he had hand-carved with a tool made from cop- per. The handle was made from a moose antler. Obsidian forms from molten lava that cooled very quickly. It is said to be a type of volcanic glass. “I carve it the old-fash- ioned way,” Anderson said. “I use a tool made from cop- per and plastic, a very simple tool. A good friend of mine carves all the handles which are made out of moose and deer antlers, elk teeth, and even a coyote jawbone. I have found many of the han- dles out in the wild.
