16 Wednesday, June 10, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Obituary Hoops camps feature British coach John W. reeves May 17, 1930 — June 5, 2015 John Reeves died peace- fully at home after a brief illness Friday, June 5, just after his 85th birthday. Born in Salem, May 17, 1930, to Bill and Myrtle Reeves, he lived most of his life in Salem. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Merlie; his daughters, Susie Hino, Christie O’Brien and son in law Jim O’Brien; as well as seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his sister Charlotte (Torkie) Keasey. John graduated from Oregon State University and was an active member of the Acacia Fraternity. He kept his ties with the uni- versity as an avid Beaver football fan, attending most home games and several away games with the alumni group. A longtime CPA, John was a partner with Bowers, Davis and Hoffman, and then in 1975 opened his own firm, Reeves, Davis CPA, (now Davis, Katter & Barrett). Retired in 1991, he enjoyed traveling the United States with Merlie in their trailer, spending the last 16 winters in Lake Havasu, Arizona, with their many fellow traveling friends, and summers at their cabin in Camp Sherman. He loved golf, playing regularly as a member of Illahee Country Club for over 50 years. John was known among his family and friends as a gracious and gentle man, always a positive influ- ence on those around him. He was a great role model for his beloved chil- dren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memo- rial gifts can be made in his name to OHSU MS Center of Oregon through the OHSU Foundation. Contributions should be made payable to OHSU Foundation. Golden Funeral Service. One of Great Britain’s most successful basketball coaches will lead Sisters Park & Recreation District Summer Basketball Camps. Coach Stephen Pearl currently coaches play- ers of varying ages. He has won nine club national titles in England with his youth teams in recent years. Accompanying him this year will be players from his girls club teams. Student athletes from 13-17 years of age will be on hand to assist in the camp. Camps will be held at Sisters High School July 12-17 for youth ages 5-14. Coach Pearl prides his club on the amount of players they have been able to pro- duce that go on to play at the collegiate level in the United States. “I am proud to be one of the players that worked with Coach Pearl when I was younger,” said SPRD Executive Director Liam Hughes. “Coach Pearl’s abil- ity to highlight each play- ers strengths and encour- age them to build on their abilities helped me to play at the college level in the U.S.” Summer camps alone do not produce champi- onship teams, but Coach Pearl believes in the adage: “Teams are built in the win- ter, but players are built in the summer.” The camp will focus on fundamentals including foot- work, agility, dribbling, pass- ing and layups. Technical training is only a portion of the camp. Coach Pearl’s specialty is inspiring players to be better than they ever thought they could be; allow- ing campers to leave with a new-found love for the game and a belief that they can achieve their dreams.
