ing a wide swing around me,
radioing over, “Follow me!”
Which I did!
“There it is,” Charlie
said. “There’s a Forest
Service strip down there.”
As I looked ahead, I watched
him go into a right bank,
head down and vanish into
the hole, I started a slow
360-degree turn over it wait-
ing to hear from him, which
took about 10 seconds, when
he blurted out, “Don’t turn to
the right! I’m in a canyon!”
and all went quiet while I sat
there helplessly waiting.
“I’m out of the canyon,”
came his voice minutes later,
and then he added, “Come
on down I’m lined up on the
strip.”
What relief washed over
me! But...
“Come on down…” was
something I’d never done
before in clouds. I gingerly
let the Citabria slowly spiral
down the hole. In seconds I
could see trees, the canyon,
and then a lot of flat Big Sky
landscape. As I turned left
under the cloud base, there
was the Forest Service strip
right on my nose.

throttle and the sweet tail-
dragger settled down on
solid, smooth earth. I sighed,
and just let the Citabria roll
out on her own until we ran
out of inertia so I could quit
shaking. And then, taxi-
ing up to Charlie in the 206
waiting at the end of the
strip, the Lycoming engine
ran out of gas.

So, the other day I rolled
