Girls lacrosse splits double-header By rongi yost Correspondent The Lady Outlaws lost 13-10 in a close game at home against Corvallis on Saturday, April 25, and posted a 12-3 victory over West Albany. In the game against Corvallis, Langley Vogt scored Sisters’ first goal right off the draw, with a fast break to the goal, and two and a half minutes later Katelyn Josten scored to put the Outlaws up 2-0. Jessica Edwards scored with just over 11 minutes left in the half, and again at the three-minute mark with a quick ground-shot off the left side of the goal. Sisters got goals from Vogt and Emily Ford in the final two minutes of the half. Corvallis scored seven goals in the half and led 7-6 as teams headed off the field. In the second half, Marissa Young, Jenny O’Connor, Taylor Schneider and Makila Lajko each scored a goal for the Outlaws. Lajko’s goal came with just under two minutes left on the clock and was her first goal of the season. “Makila is the most improved player of the sea- son,” said Coach Mikaela Trott-Rickards. “She has controlled her passing and catching, and has gone from very timid to a player who will take risks, and is intent on improving and becoming more aggressive. When she scored that goal, the entire team flooded her with hugs and cheers.” Corvallis scored their final goal with 22 seconds left on the clock and won by three. The Outlaws’ shoot- ing percentage for the game was 56 percent, and Bree Papworth had a 41 save per- centage against a total of 22 shots. Eleven players were credited with ground ball controls; Sierra Hummel had a CTO (caused turnover) and three ground balls, and Vogt recorded six draw controls. Sisters dominated play in their big win over West Albany. O’Connor got the Outlaws started with a quick goal just a little over two minutes into the contest. Jenny made a nice cut when her defender looked away, and was open in the middle of the eight-meter for a great shot, thanks to an assist from Josten. Vo g t , Yo u n g , F o r d , Schneider and Lajko followed with goals that were scattered over the next 15 minutes. Schneider, with an excellent pass from Ford, scored the Outlaws’ final goal of the first half with three minutes left on the clock, and pushed to a 7-0 advantage. West Albany got on the scoreboard with 31 seconds left, and at the half Sisters held a 7-1 lead. Sisters tacked on five additional goals in the second half; two from Vogt, one each from Josten and O’Connor, and the final goal from Edwards with 10 seconds left on the clock. West Albany scored their final two goals in the last three minutes of the game. Sisters shooting percent- age for the game was 50 percent, and Addy Baney’s (goalie) save percentage for the game was 75 percent against a total of 12 shots. Ford, Vogt, and Young each had an interception, and O’Connor had a caused turnover and three draw con- trols. Vogt recorded seven draw controls and eight ground balls, and Young and McKenna Jones finished with three ground ball controls. Trott-Rickards noted cap- tain seniors, Langley Vogt and Emily Ford, and their big contributions to the team. “Langley is my hardest working player, and is very team oriented,” said Trott- Rickards. “She focuses on improving her own skills during her off-time. She has 20 goals and 33 shots this season, with a percentage of 61 percent. She has gained 53 draw controls, the high- est in the league, and has had 18 caused turnovers and 26 ground balls. What makes Langley stand out is her dedi- cation to the sport, making sure our team is successful, staying positive and organiz- ing the team functions. She is such a fun player to watch. photo by Jerry baldock goalkeeper Addy Baney defends goal vs. West Albany. Anyone who watches our games notices her skills and level of play immediately. “Emily currently has 11 goals and 15 shots for a 73 percentage rate. She is tied with Katleyn Josten for high- est assists (five), and has had eight ground balls and three caused turnovers. What makes Emily stand out is not only her beautiful fiery red hair, but her athleticism during play. Emily makes a strong effort to catch every ball, usually incorporating a squat and a ballerina move, and has a wicked jump shot when shooting on goal. She has been an integral part of the team. I have seen her con- nect with just about everyone, always checking in with play- ers and making sure they are doing OK on and off the field. I don’t know if she knows that I notice that, but I do, and it is an amazing leadership characteristic that will travel well with her in life.” Sisters was to play at South Albany on Tuesday, April 28. The Outlaws will play at West Salem on Monday, May 4. Geoff and the rest of the Pepperling family would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part in our bingo fundraiser. To all the businesses and individuals who donated prizes for the bingo, the raffle and the silent auc- tion, there are not enough words to express how much we appreciated what you did. To all the people who donated money, the same applies to you. Thanks to the fire department for the use of the community room. We have reached our goal and are planning our trip (to Yellowstone and Colorado) for late June. We will be sending pictures of our journey to share with you along the way. The Sisters community is awesome. Thank you again. cORREcTION The athlete in a feature photo of Outlaws softball on page 15 last week was mis- identified. The hitter was Shayla Curtis.
