ODOT drives toward Sisters roundabout Lost hiker found safe in Sisters Country By Jim cornelius News Editor It may not be a “done deal,” but the Oregon Department of Transportation has a clear prefer- ence for installing a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 20 and Barclay Drive at the west end of Sisters. ODOT is seeking “concur- rence” from the City of Sisters in moving forward with a design for the roundabout, which the City indicated in 2011 was the pre- ferred control mechanism for that intersection. In the intervening years, ODOT worked with the freight industry to ensure that a roundabout on a state highway can accommodate large trucks. They brought truckers in Central Oregon and the Portland area out to run a mock-up of the proposed design in two separate PRE-SORTED STANDARD ECRWSS U.S. POSTAGE PAID Sisters, OR Permit No. 15 photo by eli pyke An 18-year-old hiker who got separated from his companions was found safe after wandering for several hours in the Pole Creek drainage. Broek Dyer of Woodburn, Washington, called 911 and reported that he had been wan- dering for four hours after having lost the trail. Dyer had spent the night camping with two compan- ions, then on their way back had become separated. Dyer had been making contact with his compan- ions via text messages, but they had not been able to locate him. Dyer’s GPS coordinates were obtained from the 911 call show- ing that Dyer was about two miles south of the trailhead, then about 500 meters to the east on the opposite south side of Soda Creek. Phone contact was made with Dyer to advise him to remain at his location until Search and Rescue (SAR) arrived. Eli pyke was canoeing when he discovered this sinkhole sucking the water out of Lost Lake. At a subsequent town- hall meeting, other ideas were suggested for consid- eration, and a majority of the 200-plus attendees voted for the following four proj- ects: Art/Science/History Inside... Center; Convention Center; Field House; Winter Sports Park. Then-mayor Brad Boyd appointed 11 volunteers to a Community Assets Committee (CAC), and for the past nine months mem- bers have been analyzing the projects systematically so the community can compare them side by side. During the process, a potential fifth project — which combines three of the ideas into one — emerged.
