Wednesday, April 8, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon C O M M U N I T 3 Y Cyclists tune up for Ride For Two Rivers Registration is open for the Ride for Two Rivers, now on Saturday, May 30. This bicycle tour takes riders up the McKenzie Pass and benefits two of Central Oregon’s Wild & Scenic Rivers through the National Forest Foundation: The Metolius River and Whychus Creek. Riders are invited to cycle with friends and family through pristine forested land- scapes and ancient lava fields while helping restore habitat for these iconic species in two of our treasured rivers. The Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce, title sponsor MODA Health, and the Eberwein Family are spon- soring the ride. The day starts with a self- paced ride up the McKenzie Pass (Highway 242), one of Oregon’s Scenic Bikeways, and finishes in Creekside Park with refreshments and locally brewed craft beer provided by Three Creeks Brewing. This seasonal route allows cyclists to enjoy this ride in the mountain spring, without vehicle traffic. This stunning ride gives riders the chance to experience all the local charm that Sisters Country has to See rIde on page 20 Rodeo parade entry forms available Entry forms for the 2015 Sisters Rodeo Parade are available at www.sisters rodeo.com. The parade will be held on Saturday, June 13, starting at 9:30 a.m. in down- town Sisters as part of the 75th Sisters PRCA Rodeo. Entry deadline is May 15, with parade position numbers to be sent out after that date, according to the committee. Application forms can be filled out and submitted online. Paper forms are avail- able at the rodeo office, 220 W. Cascade Ave. in Sisters. The entry form includes gen- eral rules for parade partici- pants, a map of the route, and where to obtain information for overnight accommoda- tions, including boarding facilities for animals. For this 75th anniversary year, the parade will honor as many former Sisters Rodeo Queens and courts as the com- mittee can locate. The com- mittee encourages anyone who knows former Sisters royalty to advise those women of this special occasion. “We are so excited about having our past queens in the parade line-up,” said Jeri Buckmann, co-chair of the parade along with Vicki Allen. SOQS shines spotlight on artists For a special 40th anni- versary event, the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show (SOQS) teamed with Island Batik to shine a spotlight on the 29 quilters who have, over the years in Sisters, received spe- cial recognition as featured quilter, inspirational instruc- tor, machine quilter of the year, or Quilt Show Sunday lecturer. “Island Batik approached us with the concept of want- ing to recognize an extraor- dinary body of work,” said Jeanette Pilak, SOQS execu- tive director. “When we looked back at the work cre- ated by the quilters we’ve honored in the past, we knew it was something we had to bring together as a special exhibit for the 2015 show. These quilters represent the best and most creative work during the 40 years since the show was founded by Jean Wells Keenan.” “We are thrilled to cel- ebrate these quilters for their superb workmanship, their mastery of a wide variety of quilting techniques, and their ability to create artis- tic beauty in quilting,” said Caleb Willis, president and CEO of Island Batik. Dolores Minson, 2003 fea- tured quilter, recalled, “Being named featured quilter in 2003 was like being chosen ‘Queen for a Day.’ Visitors from all over the world who were at the Quilt Show were so complimentary of my work. You feel validated for the effort you made in cre- ating those quilts when you see how much people enjoy them!” Ruth Golden Ingham was named featured quil- ter in 1998 and Inspirational Instructor in 2013. You can’t imagine how lucky it is to be honored,” she said. “In Sisters that year (2013), a couple came up to me that I had never met before, but whose last name was the same name as my maiden name. We tried to trace our ancestry and decided we may be distant cousins. It all happened here in Sisters!” A complete list of the 40th Anniversary Honored Quilters can be found at the SOQS website. A spe- cial exhibit featuring the work of the 2015 Honored Quilters will be on display on Saturday, July 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The honored quilters will be special guests at the Wednesday, July 8, Ruby Celebration at the Sisters High School Auditorium.
