6 Wednesday, March 25, 2015 The Nugget Newspaper, Sisters, Oregon Outlaws come from behind to win Golfers play in season’s first tournament By rongi Yost Correspondent The Outlaws came from behind to defeat Mt. View 13-9 at home in Sisters on Thursday, March 19, in an exciting first game of the season. Sisters scored 13 runs off 12 hits and three errors and Mt. View scored nine runs off of 10 hits and four errors. Ryan Funk hit a two-run single in the first inning to get the scoring started for the Outlaws. Mt. View scored four runs in the second and three more in the top of the third to take a 7-2 lead. Sisters answered back with four runs in the bottom of the third to close the gap to 7-6. Mt. View scored their final two runs in the fourth. The Outlaws responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, and tacked on three more in the fifth to seal the win. Funk was the winning pitcher-of-record for the Outlaws. Sisters had several play- ers have big games at the plate. Jonathan Luz went 3/5 with a double, Alex Olivier went 2-for-5 with three RBI, Harrer was 3-for-3 with five RBI, and Ryan Funk was By rongi Yost Correspondent photo by Jerry baldoCk ryan Funk hits a double to left wall against Mountain View. 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Zach Morgan, in his high school debut, went 2/4 with two doubles and two RBI. Harrer, Funk, and Morgan combined for eight hits and 11 RBI. Highlights included Morgan’s third-inning line drive double down the right field line which scored Harrer, and Harrer’s two-run homer in the fourth. Justin crushed the ball and sent it 40 feet over the left-field fence. “As soon as it hit the bat you knew it was leav- ing the yard,” said Coach Steve Hodges. “There was no question it was going to be a home-run.” Hodges was pleased with the Outlaws’ first game of the year. “The fact that we came back from a 7-2 deficit in the third was great,” said Hodges. “We had big third and fourth innings to put the game within reach, and then we took the lead in the fifth. It was a good confidence builder, and let the guys know you’re never out of the game. It’s always good to put a W in the win column to start the year.” Sisters’ home game against Hidden Valley on Friday, March 20, was can- celed. The Outlaws will head to Arizona for the Chandler Prep Tournament, which will be held Thursday through Saturday, March 26-28. They walked away with a decent showing. Eleven teams attended the tourney and Oak Ridge took a first-place finish. Bandon took second, North Marion was third and Cottage Grove finished fourth. Steen Johnson led the Outlaws with a score of 103. Freshman Austin Lake carded a 107, and Kade Owen was just one stroke back at 108. Ben Saba and Devin Robillard both scored a 115. Coach Bill Mitchell told The Nugget that he was especially pleased with his youngest players on the team. “Austin (Lake) is just a freshman and is a great addi- tion to our team. He had good drives and did a great job today. He’s going to put some pressure on our kids that are back from last year and hopefully they will play even better. It’s great to play a freshman in your varsity start. He’s got nowhere to go but up. “Ben Saba (sophomore) was on the team last year but he didn’t get to play in any matches. This was his first-match ever and he fin- ished with a respectable score.” On the girls side, Emily Christen was Sisters lone Outlaw who attended the tournament at Crooked River Ranch on Wednesday. Christen joined the golf team mid-season last year and according to Mitchell is still a rookie. Mitchell said, “Emily had five putts for birdies, which is amazing, unfortu- nately, she didn’t make them. Emily’s ball-striking is very good, but her putting still needs work.” Brand new to the girls team is Hogan Warner, who Mitchell hopes will be tournament-ready by mid-April. Both the boys and the girls teams will play at Eagle Crest on Friday, April 3.
