On Sunday, March 15, family and volunteers broke ground for the new home of Josh and Kristina Maxwell. The Maxwells came to Sisters two years ago from Montana looking for a fresh start. They’ve had the love and support of Kristina’s par- ents, who live here, to apply for a Habitat home, and all have been hard at work accu- mulating their sweat-equity hours. Josh has been working at the job site and Kristina, who works at US Bank, vol- unteers at the Thrift Store. She has fun and loves every- thing she does there. Carol and Kevin Neary, and Judy Osborne have been the Maxwell’s family part- ners who have been there and will continue to guide them through the process. Carol Neary said how thrilled she was for this hard-working and very enthusiastic young couple, “They are so deserv- ing of this and so grateful for every little thing.” Former board president By rongi yost Correspondent photo by Jerry balDoCk Josh and Kristina Maxwell broke ground for their future home during a Sisters Habitat for Humanity ceremony on Sunday. Kevin Neary welcomed the group and introduced Executive Director Sharlene Weed, who read an excerpt from “Theology of the Hammer” — which says that we are here to do more than talk and sing; we have to put it to work. The nail must be hit on the head again and again and again ... until a fam- ily moves in and it becomes a home built by love. In this theology, all agree on the imperative to serve, to house the world’s poor, to eliminate poverty. Construction Manager Fires are roaring at Ponderosa Forge Stop by the showroom to see what’s cooking! Shawn O’Hern said with favorable weather, he’s going to have this house completed by the first week in August. He thanked all the volunteers including Chris Mayes, the architect, and the subcontrac- tors who have been so kind, including Fred Astin, Cascade Bobcat, Hoyt’s and Lutton’s. And, he shouted, “Come on out and volunteer!” Marie Clasen, volunteer and family services manager, announced she holds orien- tations for volunteers twice a month. Call 541-549-1740 for information. The boys golf team has 13 players out for the sport this season, and all have hopes to be one of the top five players who will represent the Out- laws at tournaments. Junior Steen Johnson and sophomores Kade Owen and Devin Robillard are the only returning varsity players. Coach Bill Mitchell told The Nugget that all three boys have been working extremely hard, and have improved their game since last year — especially the putting game. “These guys will need to really work on their short game and strive to get their scores below 100,” said Mitchell. New to the team this year are senior Yasha Saldi; juniors Gabe Isle and Halston Seilen- tin; sophomores Ben Saba, Jace Kachlein, Noah Huber, Brendan Lewis and Sam Tara;. Freshmen Patrick Dingeman and Austin Lake will round out the squad. “We need five play- ers to play in a tournament, and right now we really only have three (Johnson, Owen, and Robillard) that are tournament-ready,” said Mitchell. “We need two guys to step up and deliver, and right now it looks like that will be Austin (Lake) and Ben (Saba).” The boys golf team will play at Tokatee on Wednesday, March 18, in their first tourna- ment of the season. On the girls’ side, senior Emily Christen is back for her final year. Christen tallied her lowest score ever (104) last year at the district tournament. emily is a good athlete and she wants to improve. — coach Bill Mitchell “Emily is a good athlete and she wants to improve,” said Mitchell. “She’s very strong and can hit the ball a long way. She just needs to work on her short game and get her score under 100, and I think she can do it.” Ayanna Brewer (junior) is a transfer from Elmira and will join Christen on the girls team. The girls’ first tournament of the year will be at Crooked River Ranch on Wednesday, March 18. You didn’t count on this... ...but you can count on Fullhart Insurance!
