FIRE: Home and

total loss
Sisters educator publishes book
By Jim cornelius
News Editor
Edie Jones has worked
with families and children
in Sisters for decades. As
co-owner/director at Camp
Tamarack and through
Together for Children, she
has had a direct impact on
many local families’ lives
— and she’s learned a thing
or two about raising happy,
empowered kids.
Now she’s created a rec-
ipe for success in that most
important endeavor through
a newly released book:
“Raising Kids With Love,
Honor and Respect: Recipes
for Success.”
Jones describes the book
as “the manual kids don’t
come with.”
The recipes appear at the
end of each section, summa-
rizing what has been covered,
and are repeated at the end
of the book ready to cut out
and post as reminders. Stories
illustrating how love, honor
and respect enhance parent-
ing success appear through-
out, reminding the reader of
their own interactions with
children and validating much
of what they already do.
Jones explained the gen-
esis of the metaphor: “I’d
often have a parent say,
‘Edie I wish I had you on
my shoulder, or a recording
— or maybe a recipe box.’”
The recipe idea resonated and
stuck as Jones began work on
her book three years ago.
She had retired from direct
work with families and kids.
“I was ready to retire, but
I wasn’t really ready to stop
helping parents and helping
kids,” she said. “I don’t know
if I ever will be.”
She notes that much media
attention is paid to examples
of bad parenting. However,
she says, “If you look around
you really see a lot of exam-
ples of parents doing a really
good job.”
Jones hopes that her book
will be affirming to those
parents and helpful to anyone
who works with kids.
“I hope it will be of help
to teachers and early-child-
hood educators and youth
group leaders — anyone who
works with kids,” she said.
“It should have information
that will be helpful to any of
them.”

Johnson credits the quick
response and assistance from
Cloverdale and Black Butte
Ranch Fire Districts.
“We had a very good
response of career and vol-
unteer firefighters, along with
our automatic aid partners,”
He said.
The City of Sisters
Public Works Department,
Deschutes County Sheriffs
Office, Black Butte Ranch
Police, Red Cross and the
Oregon Office of the State
Fire Marshal also responded.
The cause of the fire was

tal cooking fire. The home
and contents were determined
to be a total loss. Three dogs
were also inside the home at
the time of the fire and man-

Fire officials recommend
when cooking with hot grease
on a stove to constantly moni-
tor the stove. Officials also
recommend having a tight-fit-
ting lid close by to cover the
pan if it catches on fire.
