Library program takes
to the skies in Sisters
By Jim anderson
Correspondent
The Sisters Library’s
speaker program will climb
into the wild blue yonder on
Sunday, March 8. Friends
of The Sisters Library will
be presenting another Diane
Jacobsen Memorial Speaker
Series at 1:30 p.m. in the com-
munity room of the library.
Teacher Jon Renner will
provide a bird’s-eye view of
what Sisters High School’s
flight science program is all
about. A photographic pre-
sentation will highlight the
students as they are learn-
ing, and they will share their
experiences.
The flight science pro-
gram offers high school stu-
dents a way to prepare for
their FAA private-pilot written
exam through a collaboration
between the Experimental
Aircraft Association, Sporty’s
Pilot Shop, the Sisters School
District, Sisters Eagle Airport
and the Sisters Science Club.
The coursework for this
year-long class is provided
to students, free of charge,
through their membership
in the EAA and with sup-
port from Sporty’s. Although
their membership, and suc-
cessful participation in the
course, does grant them some
free flight instruction, quite
a bit more is suggested for
the course — and this under-
taking is shared between the
students’ parents and several
sources of local scholarship
funds. (Anyone interested in
contributing to the student’s
flying time is encouraged to
contact Renner at the high
school — 541-549-4045.)
The course is principally a
computer-based undertaking,
but is augmented with guest
speakers, and instruction from
a certified teacher who is also
a private pilot.
Renner will be bringing
a student with him to speak
about the program from their
perspective, and the Outlaw
Aviation CFII will also have
a few words about this new
flying club established by the
owners of Sisters Eagle Airport
specifically to support the
flight science program at SHS.
John Creason, Eagle Air
flight instructor, and Benny
Benson, Sisters Airport owner,
will be on hand to augment the
presentation.
The presentation is free and
open to the public.
