Sisters Science Fair
set for next month
The fourth annual Sisters
Science Fair, scheduled
Saturday, February 21, from
noon until 4 p.m. at Sisters
High School, is shaping up to
be the best one yet, according
to organizers.
From paper airplane con-
tests and rocket launches to
robots and inventions, science
is the theme and it is expected
to appeal to everyone from 9
to 90.
“We have an extensive
variety of exciting experi-
ments and displays from all
three Sisters schools, commu-
nity businesses, universities
and statewide organizations,”
said Cal Allen, director of
the Sisters Science Fair. “The
Science Fair has grown every
year along with our recogni-
tion and attendance. Everyone
who attends is amazed at
the diversity, and there
always seems to be some-
thing that appeals to every
attendee.”
This year there will be an
array of experiments from
electricity, chemistry, biology
and engineering. Healthy liv-
ing and green energy programs
will have displays from green-
house gardening to organic
vegetables in the Science
Club’s Seed-To-Table pro-
gram. The planetarium will be
set up and students, teachers,

Sisters students
to see ‘Selma’
Sisters students will gather
at Sisters Movie House on
Wednesday, January 28, for
special screenings of the
movie “Selma,” which depicts
a critical moment in the Civil
Rights movement of the
1960s.
“I was contacted Tuesday
afternoon by an individual
who wishes to remain anony-
mous about funding students
to see ‘Selma,’” said movie
house owner Lisa Clausen.
“This person was moved
by the film and the histori-
cal accuracy with which the
events are documented.”

The donor paid for tickets
for all high school students
to see the film. They will be
accompanied by staff, so that
the viewing can generate
classroom discussion.
According to Clausen,
the donor would like to see
the event serve as a catalyst
for more discussion of such
topics.
“This individual would
also like to see a history club
in the region that can lead to
rich discussions about the sub-
ject matter – in this case civil
rights and potentially race in
the U.S.,” Clausen said.

Gary Albertson, local
professional fine art photog-
rapher, will be the featured
speaker at the Diane Jacobsen
Speakers Series at the Sisters
Library on Sunday, February
8, at 1:30 p.m.
A resident of Camp
Sherman since 1999,
Albertson has shot artistic
photographs of local land-
scapes throughout Central
Oregon, and especially in the
Metolius Basin. For years, his
Sisters Gallery & Frame Shop
on Hood Avenue has featured
many of his beautiful large-
scale photographs, which are
available for purchase.
At the library presenta-
tion Albertson will take the
audience inside his journey
into blindness and explain
how he is able to continue to
capture extraordinary images
despite his increasing loss of
eyesight. The center of his
vision in both eyes is gone. In
one eye he has fuzzy periph-
eral vision around the out-
side of his vision field and in
the other he only has vision
around the inside edge.
The loss of vision is the
result of pigment dispersion
glaucoma, which was diag-
nosed in 1996 when he was
being prepped to undergo
liver transplant surgery.
Because of fear, he did not
have the recommended sur-
gery and his sight loss has
been slow and gradual since
then. He wants to encourage
people not to fear glaucoma
surgery as he did.
Albertson describes his
vision as being able to see the
way Monet painted — every-
thing vague. He contends that
going blind later in life is bet-
ter than as a young person
